Start of the doctorate
Für eine Promotion erhebt die TUM keine Gebühren. Um als Promovierende*r Ihren Lebensunterhalt zu finanzieren, haben Sie mehrere Möglichkeiten. Leses Sie die TUM-GS Informationen.
TUM does not charge any tuition fees for a doctorate. The German state bears all costs of doctoral training. Nevertheless, you will need to cover your daily expenses. There are several ways of financing your living expenses during a doctorate. Read all information of TUM-GS.
The requirements are listed in §§ 3,4 5 of the doctoral regulations.
Mit der Eintragung in die Promotionsliste beginnt die Mitgliedschaft im Graduate Center of Engineering and Design bzw. in der TUM-GS. Bei ausländischen Abschlüssen beginnt die Mitgliedschaft bei Einreichung der Unterlagen.
With your registration in the doctoral list, your membership in the Graduate Center of Engineering and Design respectively in the TUM-GS begins. In the case of foreign degrees, membership begins when the documents are submitted.
Der Doktorgrad, den Sie anstreben, ist bereits in der Bewerbungsphase anzugeben. Besprechen Sie dies unbedingt mit Ihrem/r Betreuer*in. Mehr Infos zu den Doktor-Graden.
The doctoral degree you are applying for has to be stated at the application stage. Be sure to discuss this with your supervisor. More info about die doctoral degrees.
Sie sollten möglichst früh zusammen mit Ihrem/r Betreuer*in festlegen, ob Sie eine Monographie, eine publikationsbasierte Dissertation oder eine Mediendissertation anfertigen wollen. Siehe auch § 7 der Promotionsordnung der TUM .

During the doctorate
The following elements of the GC-ED qualification programme are mandatory:

Participation in the TUM-GS kick-off seminar is mandatory. Take part in the Kick-Off seminar within the first 6 months! Dates and registration can be found in DocGS.
Das eintägige Seminar "Gute wissenschaftliche Praxis" ist für Promovierende, die nach der neuen Promotionsordnung promovieren oder in die neue PromO wechseln, verpflichtend. The seminar "Good Scientific Practice" is mandatory for doctoral candidates who are doing the doctorate after the new regulations for the Award of Doctoral Degrees or who change into these. Die Förderung department- und fachkulturübergreifender Netzwerkbildung und Kommunikation zwischen den Promovierenden der ED ist der School so wichtig, dass es jedes Jahr einen Doctoral Candidates' Day gibt.
Supporting cross-departmental and cross-cultural networking and communication between ED doctoral candidates is so important that the School organises a Doctoral Candidates' Day every year.
Verpflichtend sind fachspezifische Kurse von insgesamt mind. sechs SWS (entspricht 63 Stunden). Das GWP-Seminar zählt nicht dazu!
Subject-specific courses of at least six semester hours (equivalent to 63 hours) are compulsory. The GWP seminar does not count here!
Die TUM-GS und auch die ED bietet allen Promovierenden zahlreiche fachübergreifende Qualifizierungsmaßnahmen an. Die Teilnahme ist freiwillig. Mehr Infos hier..

Bei internen Promovierenden ist die Einbindung in das akademische Umfeld der TUM automatisch gegeben.
Bei externen Promovierenden erfolgt die Einbindung in das akademische Umfeld der TUM i.d.R. über eine Zeitspanne von insgesamt 20 % der Mindestmitgliedschaftszeit (4-5 Monate). Als Nachweis ist in DocGS ein Selbstbericht hochzuladen (siehe Downloads & Links)).
Internal doctoral candidates are automatically integrated into the academic environment of TUM.
For external doctoral candidates, the involvement into the academic environment of TUM usually takes place over a period of time corresponding to a total of 20% of the minimum membership duration (4-5 months). As proof, a self-report has to be uploaded in DocGS (see Downloads & Links).
Sie müssen mindestens zwei Jahre Mitglied in der TUM-GS sein.
The minimum time of membership is two years.
Doctoral candidates and supervisors must confirm the supervisory relationship in DocGS every year from July.

Starting from October 1st, 2021, a new version of the Regulations for the Award of Doctoral Degrees, as well as a new version of the TUM Graduate School Statutory Regulations will be effective. If you would like to switch to the new doctoral regulations, find out more here.
End of the doctorate
Für die Dissertation gibt es seitens des GC-ED oder der School of Engineering and Design keine Formatvorlage. Fragen Sie bitte bei Ihrem Lehrstuhl nach. Vorlagen für das TUM Corporate Design finden Sie hier.
Neither the GC-ED nor the School of Engineering and Design offer a format template for the dissertation. Please ask your professorship. Templates for the TUM Corporate Design are here.
Sobald Sie das Ende der Promotion absehen können, sollten Sie die Einträge in DocGS checken. Beachten Sie, dass Sie die Dissertation via DocGS erst einreichen können, wenn Sie das Qualifizierungsprogramm erfüllt haben und dieses vom GC-ED bestätigt wurde.
As soon as you can estimate the end of the doctorate, you should check the entries in DocGS. Note that you can only submit your dissertation via DocGS once you have fulfilled the qualification programme and after the GCED has accepted it.

Sprechen Sie Ihre*n Betreuer*in vor der Einreichung auf die Prüfungskommission an! Sie können die Prüfungskommission bereits auf dem Titelblatt der eingereichten Fassung angeben.
Contact your supervisor about the examination board before submitting! You can already list it on the title page of the submitted version.
Änderen Sie das Titelblatt nicht ab! Es ist in der Promotionsordnung geregelt. Die TUM-GS stellt es hier zur Verfügung (unter Punkt 3).
Do not change the title page! It is regulated in the Doctoral Regulations. The TUM-GS provides it here (see point 3).
Sobald Ihre Unterlagen in DocGS eingereicht und von uns geprüft sind, bitten wir Sie, die Angaben im vorläufigen Transcript of Records zu überprüfen. Bitte lesen Sie diese Mail vom GC-ED sorgfältig durch!
As soon as your documents have been submitted to DocGS and checked by us, we ask you to check the information in the preliminary Transcript of Records. Please read this mail from the GC-ED carefully!
Der School Council Engineering and Design bestellt die Prüfungskommission.
The School Council Engineering and Design appoints the examination board.
Die Prüfer*innen beurteilen die Dissertation durch unabhängige Gutachten. Dies soll in angemessener Frist geschehen (in der Regel innerhalb von drei Monaten).
The examiners assess the dissertation by means of independent expert reports. This should be done within a suitable period of time (as a rule within three months).
Ist die Dissertation von allen Gutachter*innen mit „Bestanden“ beurteilt, so wird die Dissertation zusammen mit den Gutachten einem Umlaufgremium in digitaler Form zur Stellungnahme zugänglich gemacht. In der Regel dauert der Umlauf 14 Tage, in der Weihnachts- und Sommerzeit wird er automatisch auf 28 Tage verlängert. Eine verkürzte Umlaufzeit ist auf schriftlichen Antrag des Betreuers/der Betreuerin beim GC-ED möglich.
If the dissertation is assessed as "Passed" by all reviewers, the dissertation together with the reports is made available to a circulation committee in digital form for comment. As a rule, the circulation period lasts 14 days; during the Christmas and summer periods it is automatically extended to 28 days. A shortened circulation period is possible upon written application by the supervisor to the GC-ED.
Erst wenn die Dissertation im "Umlauf" angenommen ist, sollte die mündliche Prüfung anberaumt werden. Mindestens eine Woche vor der mündlichen Prüfung muss das GC-ED die Einladung verschicken.
You should not schedule the oral examination until the dissertation has been accepted with the "Umlauf". The GC-ED has to send out the invitation at least one week before the oral examination.
Nach PromO §16 ordnen die Mitglieder der Prüfungskommission gegebenenfalls Änderungen der Dissertationen an. Diese Auflagen sind innerhalb der Frist (maximal drei Monate) von der/dem Promovierenden vorzunehmen.
According to PromO §16 the members of the examination committee indicate the changes to be made. These requirements are to be carried out by the doctoral candidate within the time limit (three months maximum).
Die Dissertation ist innerhalb eines Jahres nach der mündlichen Prüfung zu veröffentlichen (vgl. § 21 Promotionsordnung TUM). Infos zur Veröffentlichung der Dissertation in elektronischer Form.
The dissertation must be published within one year after the oral examination. (cf. § 21 Doctoral Regulations TUM). Information on publishing the dissertation electronically.

Die Promovierenden können nach Abschluss des Promotionsverfahrens innerhalb eines Jahres im Promotionsbüro der TUM Einblick in die Prüfungsunterlagen nehmen. Vereinbaren Sie einen Termin mit dem Center for Study and Teaching - Graduation Office and Academic Records, Office of Doctoral Affairs.
The doctoral candidates may have access to the examination documents in TUM's doctoral office within one year after completing the doctoral examination. Make an appointment with the Center for Study and Teaching - Graduation Office and Academic Records, Office of Doctoral Affairs.
