Am Anfang Ihrer Promotion an der Technischen Universität München (TUM) soll die bestmögliche Vorbereitung auf Ihren weiteren wissenschaftlichen Weg stehen. Im Fokus des Auftaktseminars der TUM Graduate School (TUM-GS) stehen daher insbesondere der Austausch mit zahlreichen Kolleginnen und Kollegen anderer Fachrichtungen und eine intensive Einbindung in ein exzellentes akademisches Umfeld. Das Auftaktseminar bietet in drei Tagen eine umfassende Einführung in alle wichtigen Themen rund um die Promotion und bietet wichtige Einblicke in die lebendige akademische Gemeinschaft der TUM.

Die drei Tage verbringen Sie mit rund 100 Promovierenden aller Fachrichtungen in der malerischen Kulisse eines alten Klosters, dem TUM Science & Study Center Raitenhaslach.

At the start of your doctorate at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) the focus is on the best possible preparation for your further scientific career. The TUM Graduate School Kick-Off Seminar is therefore geared towards exchange with researchers from other disciplines and strong integration into an excellent academic environment. In three days, it offers a comprehensive introduction to your research career and the vibrant academic community at TUM.

You will spend three days with around 100 doctoral candidates from all disciplines in the picturesque setting of an old monastery, the TUM Science & Study Center Raitenhaslach.

Program

We are pleased to welcome you to the TUM Science & Study Center Raitenhaslach near Burghausen!

Throughout the seminar, you will participate in a variety of sessions and workshops covering essential topics to support your development as an early career researcher at TUM. These include:

• An introduction to TUM Graduate School, the TUM doctorate model, and expectation management for doctoral candidates
• The basics of Research Integrity and its relevancy for your doctorate
• Networking with fellow doctoral candidates
• Getting to know TUM and essential resources for doctoral candidates at TUM

Moreover, each participant will get the chance to participate in these three transferable skills classes giving insights into three important focus areas:

Focus Area 1: Communication Skills

This course helps doctoral candidates strengthen their communication skills across academic, professional, and interpersonal settings. Emphasis is placed on clarity, adaptability, and confidence. Topics may include navigating difficult conversations, active listening, and communicating in different settings.

Focus Area 2: Interdisciplinary Cooperation

Participants develop the skills needed to collaborate effectively across disciplines and in diverse settings. Emphasis is placed on building mutual understanding, integrating heterogenous perspectives, and addressing challenges in teamwork and knowledge exchange. Topics may include project collaboration and strategies for bridging disciplinary boundaries.

Focus Area 3: Productivity Management

This course teaches strategies for managing time, projects, and workflows effectively. Emphasis is placed on maintaining productivity while sustaining a healthy work–life balance. Topics may include time management, project planning, prioritization, and approaches to working from a long-term, holistic perspective.

Travel, Accommodation, and On-Site Services

A shuttle as well as on-site accommodation and meals are provided by TUM-GS. Please note that departure and arrival times vary depending on what day you leave for Raitenhaslach! There is a group leaving on Monday and one leaving on Wednesday:

• Departure on Monday: Arcisstr. 21, main entrance at 9.00 am.
• Return on Wednesday: Arcisstr. 21, main entrance around 2 pm.

• Departure on Wednesday: Arcisstr. 21, main entrance at 10.00 am.
• Return on Friday: Arcisstr. 21, main entrance at 4 pm.

At the main entrance, you will find a check-in point where we will provide your name tag and record your attendance.

Individual travel is possible but will not be reimbursed by TUM-GS. Accommodation is shared with 1-2 people. When registering, you may provide information about room occupancy and dietary intolerances or preferences. You will receive detailed information on the schedule before the seminar.

Wardrobe and On-Site Conditions

Please be advised that some parts of the program take place outside (weather permitting) and that the former monastery in Raitenhaslach is a very old building, that cannot be heated like a modern building. We therefore recommend you dress in warm clothes (ideally in a layering system), during the autumn and winter months.

Anmeldung und Buchungsinformation

Das Auftaktseminar ist eine dreitägige Präsenz-Veranstaltung. Bitte melden Sie sich in DocGS für einen Termin an. Lesen Sie bei der Anmeldung unsere allgemeinen Geschäftsbedingungen sorgfältig durch, insbesondere im Hinblick auf kurzfristige Stornierungen. Das Seminar ist ein verpflichtender Bestandteil Ihrer Promotion. Darüber hinaus ist eine erfolgreiche Teilnahme Voraussetzung für die Internationalisierungsförderung der TUM-GS.

Bitte beachten Sie, dass die Anmeldung für die Auftaktseminare in Raitenhaslach über ein Losverfahren funktioniert. Während der einwöchigen Buchungsphase können Sie Interesse für einen bestimmten Termin anmelden. Anschließend ermitteln wir in einem Losverfahren, welche Promovierenden einen festen Platz im Kurs ihrer Wahl im Auftaktseminar erhalten.

Dies gilt nicht für die Online-Version des Auftaktseminars, da hier bestimmte Teilnahmebedingungen erfüllt werden müssen. Daher wird kein Losverfahren verwendet, sondern Plätze danach vergeben, ob die Promovierenden diese Bedingungen erfüllen.

Innerhalb von drei Wochen nach Ende der Buchungsphase werden Sie darüber informiert, ob Sie für einen festen Platz im Auftaktseminar ausgewählt wurden. Wir bitten Sie, bis dahin von Nachfragen abzusehen.

Sie können sich jeweils nur für ein Auftaktseminar an einem Termin anmelden. Wenn Sie Ihre Anmeldung ändern oder stornieren möchten, können Sie dies in Ihrem DocGS-Konto tun. Sie können sich dann für ein anderen Termin anmelden, solange der Buchungszeitraum noch offen ist. 

Aufgrund einer anhaltend hohen Zahl von Neueinschreibungen, einer hohen Zahl von fortgeschrittenen Promovierenden, die noch einen Platz benötigen, sowie anspruchsvoller organisatorischer Rahmenbedingungen, ist die TUM-GS derzeit leider nicht in der Lage, alle Anfragen sofort zu bedienen. Wir arbeiten weiter an einer Erhöhung der Kapazitäten.

Um eine optimale Erreichbarkeit zu gewährleisten, bitten wir um Angabe einer TUM oder anderen offiziellen E-Mail-Adresse bei der Anmeldung. Bei gmail/gmx-Adressen liegt es in Ihrer Verantwortung, Ihren Spam-Ordner regelmäßig zu prüfen.

Registration and Booking Information

The Kick-Off Seminar is a 3-day seminar taking place in Raitenhaslach. Please register on DocGS for one date. Upon registering, please read our general terms and conditions carefully, especially regarding cancellations at short notice. The seminar is a mandatory element of your doctorate. Furthermore, successful participation in the Kick-Off Seminar is a prerequisite for TUM-GS internationalization funding.

Please note that the registration process for TUM-GS Kick-Off seminars in Raitenhaslach works as a random assignment of places. You will be able to apply for a place during the one-week booking phase. From these applications, we will select at random who gets a fixed place in the Kick-Off.

This does not apply to the online version of the Kick-Off, since special requirements need to be met to be accepted. Thus, the spots in the online version are not randomly selected but rather are distributed according to the requirements being fulfilled.

Within three weeks after the booking period has closed, you will be informed whether you were selected for a fixed place in the 3-day seminar. We kindly ask you to refrain from inquiries until then.

You can only register for one Kick-Off seminar at a time. If you want to change or cancel your registration, you can do so by clicking on the cancel button in your DocGS account. You can then apply for another date as long as the booking period is still open.

Due to a continued high number of new enrollments, a high number of advanced doctoral candidates still in need of a place as well as demanding organizational framework conditions, TUM-GS is currently not in a position to serve all requests immediately. We are continuing to work on increasing capacity.

  Please use an official e-mail address for registration to ensure smooth and reliable communication. When using gmail- or gmx-addresses, it is your responsibility to check your spam-folder on a regular basis.

Online Auftaktseminar

Zweimal jährlich bietet die TUM-GS Online-Auftaktseminare für Promovierende an, die nicht vor Ort in Raitenhaslach teilnehmen können.

Wenn Sie mindestens eine der folgenden Voraussetzungen erfüllen, kommt für Sie die Teilnahme an einem Online-Seminar in Frage (bitte bei Anmeldung angeben):

• Sie haben kleine Kinder und keine Betreuungsmöglichkeit (das Mitbringen von Kindern und Betreuungspersonen ist möglich). Bitte schreiben Sie an: kickoff@gs.tum.de
• Sie haben andere Betreuungsaufgaben (ältere/kranke Angehörige)
• Sie befinden sich am TUMCREATE Campus
• Es gibt andere Gründe, z.B. gesundheitliche Probleme (Bitte schreiben Sie an kickoff@gs.tum.de)

Sobald wir die von Ihnen angegebenen Informationen überprüft haben, wird entschieden ob Sie die Voraussetzungen erfüllen. Anschließend erhalten Sie eine finale Bestätigung über Ihren Registrierungsstatus.

Berufliche Verpflichtungen, wie z.B. die Betreuung von Studierenden, Lehrtätigkeit, Reisen zu Konferenzen, Forschungsaufenthalte im Ausland etc. sind keine triftigen Gründe, nicht nach Raitenhaslach zu kommen. Die Teilnahme am Auftaktseminar innerhalb der ersten 6 Monate der Promotion wird dringend empfohlen, kann aber auch etwas später erfolgen.

Online Kick-Off Seminar

Twice a year, the TUM-GS offers online kick-off seminars for doctoral candidates who are unable to participate on-site in Raitenhaslach.

If you comply with at least one of the following requirements you are eligible for participating in an online seminar (please indicate in the registration form):

• Having small children and no childcare options (bringing children and caregivers is possible). Please write to: kickoff@gs.tum.de
• Having other care responsibilities (elderly/ill relatives).
• Being abroad at the TUMCREATE campus
• Other reasons, e.g. health issues (Please write to kickoff@gs.tum.de)

Once the information you indicate in the registration form has been checked, we will decide whether you comply with the requirements or not. We will then send you a final confirmation about your registration status.

Professional obligations such as supervising students, teaching, traveling to conferences, research stays abroad, etc. are not valid reasons for not coming to Raitenhaslach. We strongly recommend participation in the Kick-Off seminar within the first 6 months of your doctorate.
