Important Information

How to find out which version of the degree program (2019 or 2024) you are enrolled in

Please, log in to TUMonline and go to "Studies and Courses" => "Study Status / Curriculum". There you see a table with the ID and name of your degree program as well as the "curriculum" 20191 or 20241. The "1" in the end of the number indicates, that this is the first version of these years. Fortunately, there aren't so many changes to the curriculum that the BEMP degree program would need a "2" there and that is why on the website the "1" is not mentioned.

Language Courses

Registration for the language courses is done via TUMonline. Students who are not yet enrolled can not yet register for courses in TUMonline. However, they can check the Language Center website regularly, some courses may be offered later in the semester.

Students who did not give proof of German language skills will be given the additional requirement to within the first year of studies pass at least one module in which they earn German language skills integratively. E. g. this may be fulfilled by a German course of the language center within the general-education subjects. But also other certificates are accepted. The A1.1 level is sufficient.

There are different offers for 'German as a Foreign Language'. During the semester as well as block courses in the end of each semester.

Link to the website of the TUM language center:

https://www.sprachenzentrum.tum.de/en/sz/languages/german/

In case you do not get a place within one of the courses offered by the TUM language center, you also might have a look for other course offerings like: https://www.dkfa.de/de/deutsch-im-studium-allgemeine-informationen/ or https://kurse.vhb.org/VHBPORTAL/kursprogramm/kursprogramm.jsp?Period=78&School=12&Section=160

Access to Libraries

For access to TUM library, please have a look at https://www.ub.tum.de/en

Please note, access to e-media (e-books, e-journals, etc.) from outside the university network is via eAccess (https://login.eaccess.ub.tum.de), for which students need the TUM ID. Without a TUM ID, unfortunately, you can only access e-media with the PCs in the reading rooms of the library.

You can find your TUM ID within your tumonline account!

The e-access is only available after enrolment in the degree program, since media with costs are made available via this access.

Academic and Examination Regulations

You can find information on the academic and examination regulation in the Academic and Examination Regulations (Fachprüfungs- und Studienordnung): https://academics.nat.tum.de/en/msc/bemp/legal-basis

The most important points are as follows:
  • You must attend the mandatory modules and at least pass two of the four mandatory modules by the end of the 2nd semester, for those who started with summer semester 2024 and later.
You must attend the mandatory modules and at least pass one of the two mandatory modules by the end of the 2nd semester, for those who started between summer semester 2020 and winter semester 2023/24.
  • Academic progress check (“not more than one year behind“). The credit points have to be from the degree program (no extra courses).
    - by the end of the 3rd semester: 30 credit points
    - by the end of the 4th semester: 60 credit points
    - by the end of the 5th semester: 90 credit points

The presentation for the first-year students of the summer semester 2024:

The following presentation contains some more detailed information regarding the program structure and the academic and examination regulations of your Master's degree program, for those who started between summer semester 2020 and winter semester 2023/24:

Curriculum and Choosing your Modules

Please remember that the degree program is intended to have 30 CP per semester. You also can do less or more as you individually like. There is an academic progress check (for further information please refer to the pdf 'Academic and Examination Regulation' within the above section). For instance, you have to have gained at least 30 CP until end of third semester. Furthermore, you have to pass two of the four mandatory modules by the end of the 2nd semester, for those who started with summer semester 2024 and later.

Note: If you would like to have new elective modules included in the focus areas, you might want to write an email to studium@nat.tum.de (subject reading "new modules BEMP") until (a) March 1, for the next following summer semester, (b) September 1, for the next following winter semester. Please include the ID, title and a link to the description of the module in question in your request. The examination board will evaluate the proposals. Accepted proposals will then be published at the beginning of each semester.

How to register for the courses and exams

The registration takes place via TUMonline (https://campus.tum.de), exclusively. Within your 'Study Status / Curriculum' go to the specific modules within 'Course Phase'. There, all modules are listed.

You find a description on how to register for courses within this wiki on registration procedures for courses.

You have to register for the courses and for the exams separately. The registration for the courses is needed to gain access to moodle/zoom, etc. You can register for the courses or exams once you are enrolled to the degree program.

Registration for courses will open latest at beginning of lecture time. The registration for the exercise classes is opened and organized individually by each course. So, please, check regularly for corresponding openings.

For exams, there are regularly two time periods for module exams at TUM. The first follows immediately the lecture period, the second is just before the lecture period of the following semester begins. The exact dates for the current and following semesters are given on the Website of the Department of Physics: https://academics.nat.tum.de/en/studies/org/faq/studies/exams
Please keep in mind that there might be small deviations and possibly different dates in other departments.

Please, make sure to register for the exams!

You find a description on how to register for exams within this wiki on registration procedures for exams.
There is no registration for any of the modules done automatically. You have to register by yourself. If you do not register, you cannot take part at the examination.

It is highly recommended to attend the appointments for review of exams.

How to get a schedule of courses

How to use your curriculum to find your personal schedule and semester planhttps://collab.dvb.bayern/display/TUMdocs/View+semester+plan+and+schedule.

Language of instruction

If the module description states 'English or German' the language of instruction is English if one of the students is not familiar with German. If the module description states 'German' the course will be offered in 'German'. If it states 'English' it will be offered in 'English'. However, sometimes the information is outdated.

How to choose your mentor

On the following website you get some more information about the mentor councelling and also a list of mentors for your degree program: https://academics.nat.tum.de/en/msc/bemp/mentor

A mentor can help you putting together your individual curriculum. Choose your curriculum and ask your mentor for feedback – rather at the beginning of your studies. You might talk to several mentors, if you want to. The discussed individual curriculum is not fixed, you can change your choice of courses later on.

Information on BEMP Lab Course Modules

Usually we offer a preliminary meeting for the BEMP lab course at the beginning of each semester. At this meeting the experiments of the current semester will be presented and individual questions will be answered.

Information on BEMP Lab Courses
In the beginning of the lecture time of the summer semester 2024 Prof. Julia Herzen and Dr. Katja Block will explain the general BEMP Lab Course framework, there will be a shortly presentation of the experiments of the summer semester 2024 and time for answering individual questions. This event will be held online via zoom.

General aspects:

According to the curriculum and the general structure of the program, the BEMP Lab Course (=Advanced Practical Training) is scheduled for the 2nd semester of studies.

Currently, most of the BEMP lab course are offered in en bloc format at the end fo the semester (March / April for winter semester, September / October for summer semester). The individual course scheduling will be announced in the beginning of each semester.

The advanced experiments dealing with different topics from the research area of Biomedical Engineering and Medical Physics are carried out, whereof the students perform one of them. The subjects of the experiments offered correspond to the research areas of the different institute from the physics department and the Munich Insitute of BioEngineering, thus facilitating future decisions regarding choices of specialization or topics for Master's theses. The topic of lab course experiments can be freely chosen from the offered catalog. Each experiment takes about 60 hours of laboratory work.

The lab course is carried out in groups of usually 3 participants mostly. The groups are working self-dependently as far as possible. A supervisor supports the group in case that questions or problems arise. The lab course usually consists of four parts: Preparation – studying introductory material; Execution – performing the experiment; Report – summarizing the main methods and results in writing; Discussion – answering questions posed by an examiner.

The modules are examined by a laboratory assignment in form of a pass/fail requirement. The students perform one experiment from the catalog. The lab work is assessed on the performance in the experimental containing several steps of experimental and theoretical nature.

Usually an experiment involves four parts:

-       Preparation (insufficiently prepared participants may be rejected due to safety reasons).
-
Execution (20%).
-
Report (5-10 pages, 60%).
-
Discussion (duration: 15 minutes, 20%).

The current semester offerings will be communicated via email in the beginning of each semester.
