Major changes

  • The easiest way to register for the course is via the application Courses and selecting the curriculum there.
  • The time of registration is no longer important, i.e. there is no registration based on the “First Come First Served” principle anymore. So there is no need to set the alarm clock to the start time of the registration period.
  • Students no longer register for the individual course group directly, but for a registration procedure. This separation from course groups allows the allocation of fixed places in different courses when there are dependencies between these groups. A registration procedure can be used for various registrations. e.g. for a module registration (lecture and main exercise with one registration), but also for the equal allocation of main seminars or for the configuration of personal schedule models.
  • With registration procedures, the 4 steps from registration to requirements check to distribution and place allocation are now asynchronous (see section Registration Status). In the distribution process, the rules of the procedure are applied first. If students can choose between several groups in a registration procedure, they can indicate their group preferences. These preferences are evaluated after to the rules of the procedure.
  • Often the registration procedures are configured in a way that overlapping of course dates will be avoided. If the dates of the course group B overlap with the dates of another course group A for which the student is already registered, no place in the course group B will be allocated, even if the course group does not have a restricted number of participants. The participant administrator at the chair (not the lecturers themselves) can manually override this configuration, if necessary.

Requirements for registration

Registering for a course is still only possible for students if

  • the course has been approved and thus published for students,
  • at least one group has been created and assigned to a registration procedure,
  • the registration procedure in question has a valid registration period and is published,
  • the students have an active registration status for the semester of the course

(Info) As before, only students with fixed places will be synchronized in the respective Moodle courses.

Registration for a course

In order to register for a course, open the application "Courses" in TUMonline.

In this application you can select the semester and set your curriculum. Thus, all published courses which are assigned to your degree program will be displayed. In addition, a compact overview of your registered courses (My courses) and your bookmarked courses (My Bookmarked Courses) is integrated.

If a registration procedure has been configured and the registration period is open, the "Course registration" button is active. Details about filter settings can be found on the Courses page.

Details about the registration procedure

In the header of the procedure, students see the registration period, the ranking criteria, as well as details on the allocation of places.

  • During the registration period, registrations, place requests and, if applicable, preferences can still be edited.
  • The details of the place allocations show you for which time the distribution and allocation of places is scheduled (not necessarily when they are actually carried out).

Several degree programs

If you are enrolled in more than one degree program at the same time, you have to select the degree program first for which you want to carry out the registration.

Procedure with registration for all groups

If it was defined in the procedure that each student should receive a place in each assigned group, you can enter your place request with one simple click when registering. There is no further selection necessary.

Procedure with group selection

If it was defined in the procedure that students can choose from different assigned groups, select your preferred group(s). You can then edit the preference for each group and finally submit your place request.

Process with continuous fixed place allocation

If a continuous fixed place allocation has been defined in a procedure with an unlimited number of participants (see down below), each student who submits a place request receives a fixed place after a certain delay. Thus, a group can be selected without indicating preferences.

Registration Status

  1. The registration generates a “Place request”.
  2. If the formal requirements of the curriculum are fulfilled, the next status is “Check Requirements" (sometimes referred to as "Requirements met”). The status "Check Requirements" has no relation to content-related prerequisites, previous knowledge, etc. or whether those are manually checked by the instructor or the supervising organization.
  3. The registration remains in the status “Check Requirements” until the allocation of places is started.
  4. After allocation of a fixed place it reaches its final status “Assigned confirmed place”.

(Warnung) The registration alone does not imply a later confirmed place. In the list "My" Courses" all registered courses are displayed - with the registration status.

E-Mail notification

Students are automatically notified by e-mail of any relevant changes to their registrations:

  • Registration or deregistration for/from a registration procedure by members of staff
  • Receipt and loss of fixed places due to manual status changes
  • Changes to the registration status: From/to “place request” or “check requirements”

Distribution and receipt of places

Usually a distribution is initiated after the registration period. The registrations are distributed among the available places according to the ranking criteria of the procedure and, if applicable, according to the group preferences at the time of registration (see above for overlapping course dates).

If necessary, the registrations can be edited by the participant administrator at the chair: One organization may want to keep the groups as small as possible, while the other may increase the group size to make optimal use of the few lecturers.

Finally, the successfully “distributed” registrations can be assigned a fixed place.

Registration procedure without place restrictions

If there are no place restrictions, neither in the registration procedure nor in the assigned course groups, a continuous fixed place allocation can be activated. Using this method, new registrations are processed by the system approximately every 5 minutes and the maximum number of possible fixed places is allocated in the registration process.

With the continuous fixed place allocation the overlap check of course dates can also be active. If the dates of a course group B in the procedure overlap with the dates of a course group A for which the student is already registered, no place in course group B would be allocated.
