Upgrade from MySQL 8.0 to MySQL 8.4 on the database servers of the Standard Hosting

On Tuesday, May 12, 2026, between 7:00 and 8:00 a.m., the database servers for Standard Hosting (mysql-web2.sql.lrz.de & mysql-web4.sql.lrz.de) will be upgraded from MySQL 8.0 to MySQL 8.4. From that point on, logging in via the mysql_native_password authentication plugin will no longer work (see the previous point and the emails we sent).

Please check in advance whether your application is compatible with MySQL 8.4 and update it if necessary.

 

Coming migration of database passwords

Since MySQL 8.0 reaches EOL status at the end of April, we want to upgrade the database server (Debian 12 and MySQL 8.0) to Debian 13 and MySQL 8.4 in the near future.This is the next major MySQL release, and the previous authentication
plugin mysql_native_password is disabled by default. It is therefore necessary that all MySQL users migrate to the caching_sha2_password plugin beforehand.

Quote from the MySQL documentation:

The mysql_native_password authentication plugin is deprecated as of  MySQL 8.0.34, disabled by default in MySQL 8.4, and removed as of  MySQL 9.0.0.

This is just a preliminary announcement or a note that we will be placing a new password file in your home directory in the near future, which will contain the new caching_sha2_password password. We will inform those concerned again, once th migration can take place.

 

PHP 8.4 available

Sites in the standard hosting can use PHP 8.4 now on request.

Available PHP versions: 8.2 (default), 8.3, 8.4
