Abstract

Volumetric clouds not only enhance the visual appeal of a video game but also possess great potential for gameplay and level design. This thesis aims to develop a real-time volumetric clouds framework within Unreal Engine 5. The framework will encompass rendering realistic looking volumetric clouds, as well as authoring them through various methods. This includes modeling clouds with meshes, akin to a block-out workflow familiar to level designers, drawing them or importing existing meshes directly as volumetric clouds. Furthermore, the framework aims to enable interactivity with the clouds during runtime, facilitating both gameplay mechanics and visual effects.
