Abstract

The growing demographic shift towards an aging population presents unique challenges and opportunities in leveraging technology to enhance the quality of life for the elderly. This bachelor’s thesis, titled "SMARIOT: Elevating Elderly Independence through Smart Mirror, AR, and IoT Technologies," explores the integration of smart mirrors, augmented reality (AR), and Internet of Things (IoT) to support independent living among seniors. The research delves into the development and evaluation of a comprehensive smart mirror system designed to address the physical, cognitive, and social needs of elderly individuals. The smart mirror incorporates advanced features such as health monitoring, fall detection, and personalized virtual assistance, aiming to mitigate the risks associated with aging, such as falls and cognitive decline. Augmented reality functionalities are employed to enhance pedestrian navigation, offering an intuitive interface for outdoor mobility. IoT integration facilitates seamless interaction between various smart home devices, promoting a safer and more connected living environment. Extensive user testing and interviews with elderly participants highlight significant improvements in usability and effectiveness, with positive feedback emphasizing the potential of these technologies to foster independence and well-being. This thesis contributes to the field of Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) by providing a scalable and user-centered solution, demonstrating that technological innovation can play a pivotal role in enhancing the autonomy and quality of life for the aging population. The findings underscore the importance of interdisciplinary approaches in creating age-friendly technologies, advocating for continued research and development in this vital area. By addressing the multifaceted challenges faced by the elderly through innovative technological solutions, this work paves the way for a future where aging individuals can live more independently and with greater dignity.
