Info

For the configuration of the (WiFi) network "eduroam" you can simply use the configuration assistant "geteduroam". This application will automatically configure the network using user certificates, similar to our eduVPN service. These user certificates are then valid for the whole semester (or start of the next one to be precise) before a re-authentication is needed.

Tipp

For the setup process a internet connection is necessary - you can use mobile data or your network at home. If you are on campus you can also use the public @BayernWLAN for this.

About geteduroam

The entire geteduroam project is open source and is available on GitHub: https://github.com/geteduroam/linux-app - Prebuilt installation packages for the Linux app are available as Debian packages, as RPM packages or as platform-independent Flatpak via the Linux app store ‘Flathub’. There are also some unofficial packages, e.g. in the Arch User Repository.

For advanced users, in addition to the option of installing the command line version of geteduroam, you could also create the certificates manually and configure the NetworkManager or WPA_Supplicant directly.

Debian based Distros (Debian/Ubuntu/Linux Mint etc.)

Many distributions such as Ubuntu or Linux Mint provide a graphical installer for .deb packages (e.g. gdebi or captain), in which case you can simply download the file via the link and install it with a simple double-click.

Guide
  1. Download the newest Version for your device
→ For ARM based devices like the Raspberry PI or Pinebook replace "amd64" with "arm64"
    Shell
    wget -nv "https://github.com/geteduroam/linux-app/releases/latest/download/geteduroam-gui_linux_amd64.deb" -O /tmp/geteduroam-gui.deb
  2. Install the package
    Shell
    sudo apt-get install /tmp/geteduroam-gui.deb

RPM Distributionen (RedHat/Fedora/OpenSUSE)

Anleitung
  1. Download the newest Version for your device
→ For ARM based devices like the Raspberry PI or Pinebook replace "amd64" with "arm64"
    Shell
    wget -nv "https://github.com/geteduroam/linux-app/releases/latest/download/geteduroam-gui_linux_amd64.rpm" -O /tmp/geteduroam-gui.rpm
  2. Install the package
→ Ideally select your Distros own package manager instead of using 'rpm' (e.g. dnf, yum, zypper or yast), so that all dependencies will be resolved and installed correctly
    Shell
    sudo rpm -i /tmp/geteduroam-gui.rpm

Cross-Distro Package (Flatpak via Flathub)

Guide

Flatpak/Flathub

For a installation from Flathub the Flatpak package manager and the Flathub repository must be set up prior to the installation. Most modern (beginner friendly) distributions, except the Ubuntu family, ship this by default. If in doubt you can find guides for most Distros on the website of the project: https://flathub.org/setup

  1. Install from Flathub: ( https://flathub.org/apps/app.eduroam.geteduroam )
    Get it on Flathub
  2. Alternatively use the command line:
    Shell
sudo flatpak --system install flathub app.eduroam.geteduroam

  3. Your default web browser will be opened for the next steps

  4. Login with your preferred login method
→ Either with the university Microsoft Account, your Passkey or with the RZ-Kennung, password and 2FA-Code

  9. Optional: Enable a notification to warn when the certificate is about to expire

  10. The setup is now finished - you can now connect to eduroam
