Info
The “eduroam” (education roaming) initiative is a project designed to provide users at participating educational and research institutions (e.g. schools, colleges and universities) with easy, cross-organisational access to scientific networks and the Internet. Via roaming it allows users to use their home organisation's credentials to access various access points (usually Wi-Fi). Administration and networking are handled by the respective institutions connected to the education network, as well as national NRENs such as the "Deutsches Forschungsnetz" (DFN) and pan-European and international research networks such as GÉANT.
In addition, authorised service providers such as for example the city and municipal utilities of Augsburg can also offer the network as a service provider. At locations where @BayernWLAN is available – like at government and administrative buildings of Bavaria – the “eduroam” network is also generally offered.
At the University of Augsburg, the “eduroam” Wi-Fi network connects all wireless network and internet access needs of its users. In addition to Internet access, students, employees and internal guests of the University of Augsburg also have access to some (internal) local university IT services such as the Campus Files System (CFS) and selected online services such as research and book publisher catalogues via eduroam.
With the latest generation of “eduroam”, we are relying on certificate-based access (EAP-TLS) to increase security, convenience and compatibility. Configuration is easy using the “geteduroam” application and the associated web portal. Instructions for setting up “eduroam” on the respective end devices can be found on these subpages.
With credentials of other participating institutions you have access to the science network and the Internet in accordance with the specifications of the "Deutsches Forschungsnetz" (DFN). Configuration instructions can be found at the support desk of your home institution or, for participating organisations, at the “eduroam CAT” project: https://cat.eduroam.org
