As a professor you apply for a settlement permit as a highly qualified person in accordance with Section 18c AufenthG (German Residence Act).

Steps - How to get a settlement permit

  1. After you have registered your adress at the Citizen Office in Munich, use the online form to start your application for your settlement permit at the Immigration Office Munich.

Required documents:

    1. completed and signed application form "Antrag auf Erteilung bzw. Verlängerung eines Aufenthaltstitels"
    2. proof of health insurance (abroad) / offer of private health insurance / confirmation of application
    3. curriculum vitae
    4. copy of passport
    5. copy of visa and entry stamp
    6. registration certificate from the Citizen Office
    7. tenancy agreement (as proof how many persons live on how many sqm) or the form "Wohnraumbescheinigung zur Vorlage bei der Ausländerbehörde"
    8. university certificates
    9. confirmation of employment (letter of confirmation from MDCO / copy of 1st page of the offer of appointment as scan)
  1. MDCO informs the KVR about submitted application: studentenberatung.abh@muenchen.de
  2. It takes around 12- 14 weeks from the application until you receive the eAT.
  3. The electronic settlement permit (eAT) is sent to you via post. You need to receive the eAt in person. In verifiable emergencies (e.g. you need the eAT urgently to start your professorship), you can contact the staff of KVR at Entrance A, Door 3 in person. The KVR will then check whether an emergency exists and you will either be given an appointment by phone or a waiting number for the service point in waiting zone 31 on the 3rd floor. The staff at the service point will make a proposal to clarify your emergency.

Steps - How to deal in cases of emergency

For example if your visa is ending and you have not received a settlement permit yet, you can book an appointment online to obtain a paper called "Fiktionsbescheinigung": This is a paper that makes sure that your rsidence is considered legal and permitted until the application for your settlement permit is confirmed.

What is an emergency? An emergency is an unforeseeable situation in which a document is needed immediately, as otherwise damage is imminent. Like your visa is ending and you do not have a settlement permit or you have to travel due to a a professional or personal reason likewise a bisness trip or a death in the family.

  1. Book online an appointment in cases of emergency.
  2. Please bring valid identification papers to the appointment as well as all necessary documents to confirm the facts.
  3. The general processing time is 8 weeks from receipt of the application documents. For this reason, the foreigners office only issue emergency fictions if the 8 weeks have expired and the client has still not received an appointment OR if an emergency can be proven (according to the "emergency definition).

The appointments for emergencies are released on a daily basis and several times a day. Please check in the afternoon if the Foreigners' Registration Office has released  new appointments for the next day.
