Citizens of EU and EFTA Member States (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland) are entitled to freedom of movement and have unrestricted access to the German labor market. They do not require a visa or a residence permit to enter and obtain employment in Germany.

All others Third Country Nationals must submit a visa application to their local German Embassy or Consulate before entering Germany if they want to work in Germany.

As a professor of TUM with a third country nationality, you have to apply for a visa. If you are starting a W2 Tenure Track position, your type of visa is EU Blue Card. If you are starting a W3 (associate or full) professorship, you need a settlement permit.

Third country nationals need to apply for a residence permit after their arrival in Germany.
