Information for Applicants
Dear Applicant,
Thank you for your interest in the Master of Science program in Land Management and Geospatial Science (LMGS) at the Technical University of Munich (TUM). This section provides information on the application, admission, enrollment, and financial aspects of your future studies.
Before applying
An essential requirement for completing the LMGS program is an affinity with land and spatial issues and the ability to think spatially. Past experiences show that basic geospatial engineering skills and familiarity with GIS software and spatial data capture, analysis, and interpretation are recommended for participating in the program. Please review the program documentation to ensure that the contents of LMGS fit your expectations and goals for further studies. Kindly note that applications for admission for the 2025/26 Winter Semester will be based on the new LMGS Academic and Examination Regulations.
Application and admission
Application for admission to the LMGS program must be made via the TUMonline web portal. To learn more about the online application using TUMonline, follow the steps of these instructions. TUMonline will require you to create a TUMonline account to be able to access and update your application information and to submit your personal data (i.e., address, email, etc.) as well as upload certain required documents.
To be admitted to the LMGS program, all required documents must be uploaded to TUMonline. If you receive an offer of admission, you will additionally have to submit individual documents as notarized hard copies by post to be enrolled. After accepting an offer of admission in TUMonline, you will receive a list of documents you must submit to TUM in hardcopy for enrollment.
You can find a detailed step-by-step procedure for applying via this link.
Application dates
Start of the application period: 1 January
End of application period (for all applicants): 31 May
For non-EU citizens, we highly recommend sending your complete application by 15 March in order to avoid visa issues due to late admission.

Competences in engineering, natural and social sciences
LMGS applicants are expected to show competencies in engineering sciences (e.g. surveying, mathematics, geoinformatics, GIS and project management), natural sciences (e.g. natural resource management, land use planning and environment) and social social sciences (e.g. governance, spatial planning, property law) that are relevant for land management and geospatial science. Therefore applicants are required to have achieved at least 40 credits in each of the three areas in the bachelor studies.
Documents
Please note: You do not have to submit any hardcopies before your application is reviewed and you receive an offer of admission. All documents have to be uploaded via TUMonline.
For the documents to be submitted, the deadlines and procedures please look here.
Please prepare and submit your application by yourself and do not submit your application through mediators such as educational consultants, agencies, or professors as these will not be considered. Applications or documents of application submitted by fax or e-mail cannot be accepted. Only complete applications with all requested documents will be evaluated.
List of the documents needed for admission
Required:
- Completed TUMonline application form for admission - you need to download and sign it and re-upload it in the TUMonline portal
- Degree certificate and diploma or subject and grade transcript of studies to date
- Transcript of records
- Complete and current curriculum vitae in English language
- Letter of motivation (statement of purpose) in English language including your reasons for pursuing further studies in LMGS, relevant professional experience, professional or personal goals, and how you intend to apply the acquired knowledge. Please keep it concise - one page is enough
- Proof of English language proficiency. If the language of instruction of your bachelor’s degree was in English, it is sufficient to submit the transcript of records or the degree certificate of your Bachelor’s degree together with a letter from your university as proof of English proficiency and in which it is stated that you undertook your studies in English. Otherwise, you will have to submit a recognized test of English proficiency certificate such as "Cambridge Main Suite of English Examinations", the "Test of English as a Foreign Language" (TOEFL) with the minimum requirement of 88 points or the "International English Language Testing System" (IELTS) with the overall band score of 6.5 and higher.
- Passport
Additional requirements for international students outside the EU/EEA or Switzerland
Applicants who have obtained their qualification for postgraduate studies (usually a Bachelor's degree) outside the EU/EEA or Switzerland are required to have their application documents proofed before submission by the University Application Service for International Students (uni-assist e.V.). Uni-assist will issue a VPD certificate which must be uploaded in TUMonline. If you do not have a final VPD yet, but are waiting for uni-assist to process it, you must confirm to TUM that you have applied for the VPD in due time and in full. Otherwise, your application cannot be processed. For further information on the VPD certificate, visit our homepage: Preliminary Documentation (VPD) by uni-assist
- All applicants with a Chinese, Vietnamese or Indian school or university degree need to provide a valid APS certificate. You need to submit the APS certificate together with the other necessary documents to uni-assist. Additionally, you need to u submit the original APS certificate to TUM for enrollment.
*) Original document or certified copy required.
IMPORTANT. Please make sure that your documents are certified as required. Otherwise your application has to be refused. Some universities issue their transcripts in a sealed envelope. If no seal is placed in the original document, such a document won't be accepted. You have to notarize such documents by an authority in your country.
Please also check special condition for certain countries.
Please only submit the documents that are required or mentioned as optional. Do not send extra/supplementary certificates that are not required. They will not be considered for your admission!
Application and admission procedure (aptitude test)
After submission of the required documents, an application review is carried out. First, the documents are formally checked by the TUM Enrollment Office on completeness and correctness. Only complete and correct applications are forwarded to the LMGS office for the aptitude assessment. Selection for the Master of Science program LMGS will be made by the Admission Committee on the basis of the documents of application (Assessment of Aptitude). Admission to the LMGS program is highly competitive. In some cases, online interviews (e.g. via Zoom) with applicants might be necessary. Using our points system, each applicant can gain up to 100 points (where 100 points is the best possible result) considering:
- Competence in engineering sciences (up to 40 credits), natural sciences (up to 40 credits) and social sciences (up to 40 credits). The number of points is calculated as no_of_points = sum_of_ECTS - 60, where the sum_of_ECTS is the sum of ECTS completed during the undergraduate studies in engineering sciences, natural sciences and social sciences respectively, that are relevant for land management. For computing the competence points the grades obtained in the relevant courses are not taken into accounts, but only the credits. You can earn up to 60 points.
- Average grade from the transcript of records. The original average grade as given by your home university is converted into the German grading system by the TUM Admission Office. The German system ranges from 1.0 (best) to 4.0 (sufficient). The conversion formula maps your grading system onto this scale. Then, the average grade is converted into a point scheme, which is used for LMGS admission. From the average grade, you can earn 30 points as a maximum. In detail the points are computed as follows:
- 0 points for grade 3.0 and 30 points for 1.0 (in German grading system)
- number of points = 3 - grade * 15
- Motivation letter (up to 10 points) and essay.
Based on the total number of points accumulated from 1, 2 and 3 above, applicants are:
- directly admitted if they have at least 70 points,
- rejected if they have less than 50 points,
- are invited to an interview if they have a score between 50 and 69 points.
In the interview, the applicants can get up to 190 points. Applicants with interview points ≥ 120 are admitted, while applicants with interview points < 120 are rejected.
After a successful application process, you need to follow the steps of the enrollment procedure.
