Enrollment

If accepted to the ESPACE program, you have to accept the study place in order to receive an official acceptance letter via your TUMonline account including the information on the process of enrollment. The provided admission letter is considered official (the German version is the only legally binding letter) and is what you would use to apply for your student visa. This means you will not receive a hard copy via regular mail of your admission letter.

If your local German embassy requires an admission letter with a TUM seal or stamp, please inform us accordingly. Otherwise, you may have a long delay and ultimately not receive your student visa on time!

After a successful application, for the enrollment, TUM needs some documents as hardcopies. In your TUMonline account it is indicated which documents you need to provide. You can either send certified copies via post to the enrollment office or submit them in person to TUM.

List of the documents needed for enrollment after successful application:

  • Passport style photo (as for ID)
  • Passport *)
  • Evidence of student health insurance (issued by a compulsory health insurance company, usually a German one)
  • Degree certificate *)
  • Diploma *)

*) Original document or certified copy required.
IMPORTANT: Please make sure that your documents are certified as required. Otherwise your application has to be refused. Some universities issue their transcripts in a sealed envelope. If no seal is placed in the original document, such a document won't be accepted. You have to notarize such documents by an authority in your country.

Those documents do not have to be submitted by the enrollment deadline. In an ideal case you have submitted them and are enrolled before you start your studies at TUM in October.

Deadline for enrollment: Usually five weeks after the start of the lecture period in winter semester.

Once all your required documents for enrollment are received at the TUM Enrollment Office , and you have paid the semester fee, you will be automatically enrolled into the TUM as a student and will be able to print out your enrollment confirmation via your TUMonline account. As the enrollment process is mostly digital now, there is no longer an official "enrollment day" at the TUM, where all students had to enroll in person on a specific day. Nevertheless, please note that you are expected to be in Munich by the end of September/beginning of October for the orientation week! All steps of the admission and enrollment procedure can be followed in the TUMonline system.

Financial Aspects

Technical University of Munich (TUM) is a German state university financed by taxes. For your studies at TUM you will be charged a small semester fee for administrative purposes for each semester. The information on the amount and the payment deadline can be found on that website or in your TUMonline account during the enrollment process.

From winter semester 2024/25 on, TUM will charge tuition fees for students from Non-EU countries. For the ESPACE program, TUM charges 6000 euros per semester. All relevant information on this subject, including who these tuition fees apply to and how TUM uses them, is summarized on the linked website.

Scholarships

German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) provides a large database on finding scholarships

BAYHOST (scholarships for applicants from eastern European countries)

TUM is setting up scholarships, exemptions and waivers for international students required to pay tuition fees. All relevant and up-to-date information on this subject can be found on the linked website.

Housing and living

The ESPACE program coordination team is not capable of finding accommodation for students. Rather, students themselves are responsible for finding a place to live before arriving here. The Center of International Affairs at the TUM and Munich's Office of Students Services offer support for students with this as well. Unfortunately, due to limited capacities of student residences in Munich, there is no guarantee to get a student apartment. Living in Munich is not cheap: you may need up to 1000 EUR per month or more (depending on accommodation). Students are therefore encouraged to start their housing search as soon as they are admitted to the program! TUM offers tips how to find accommodation.
