DSS Noteworthy information about the transition from Globus Connect Server v4 to v5
Our partner Globus from the University of Chicago is advancing their Globus Connect Server product, that is used by LRZ to give you access to DSS from everywhere in the world from Version 4 to Version 5. While from a user perspective not much will change, Version 5 changes a lot of the inner workings of and system interactions with the Globus Connect Server product. For us, that means we needed to change and redesign the interaction between DSSWeb and Globus to be able to continue to provide you the data sharing functionality of DSS with external users. While most of that is behind the scenes there is the following, noticeable change for our users when we migrate from GCS v4 to v5:
Currently, all users that access DSS with their LRZ, LMU or TUM account use the Globus Endpoint "Leibniz Supercomputing Centre's DSS - CILogon", which has the unique ID (UUID): a9ab7d72-f77b-11e6-ba7f-22000b9a448b. This UUID is used for example if you have bookmarked the Endpoint either in Globus or in your browser. When we switch to V5, the UUID of the endpoint will change to c3f32bba-797e-11e6-8435-22000b97daec. That means that you'll need to update your Bookmarks in Globus or Browser to point to the new UUID. Apart from this change we do not expect any breaking changes and the transition from v4 to v5 should be barely noticeable for our users.
Last but not least we want to point out a great new feature that will come available once we've switched to V5 which is the ability to up- and download smaller amounts of files directly via the web browser. So for quickly moving or sharing smaller amounts of data you or your partners do not need to install the Globus Connect Personal software anymore. However for lager data movements we still recommend to use Globus Connect Personal as it is more performant and reliable.
