Abstract

This thesis explores the design and development of a rirtual reality level editor that is specifically geared towards the blockout process. The user should be able to create the rough layout and shape of a video game level while working in VR. The focus is on leveraging VR technology to allow level designers to intuitively create and interact with the simple geometric shapes of a blockout to gain a better sense of their volume and spatial relationships. The research aims to investigate if and how VR can provide a new outlook and perspective on level design and help improve the perception of volume and scale during the design workflow. To achieve this, the concept of a virtual reality blockout editor is tested in a user study to assess the viability of this approach in a level design process.
