Abstract
The goal of this paper is to examine the role of AI companions in video games and mainly how they are used to guide the player in navigation and gameplay related tasks. We are going to define several methods used to guide the player by these companion characters and examine what effect they have on the gameplay experience and look at examples from existing games. What we want to achieve is to help developers get a better understanding of how these companions are used or can be used to better suit their design goals. We are going to look at how and when certain methods are used as well as get a little bit into how story level aspects can influence these decisions.
