Abstract

It starts with a simple fact: Playing games is fun; studying, most of the time, is not. Many people struggle to concentrate while studying, which drastically reduces the learning effects. Serious Games offer a way of combining the entertainment inherent to games with learning contents to ease the process of studying. Being able to passively learn something while playing a game is greatly beneficial to one’s motivation and attention span. In addition to entertainment games may also induce a state of Immersion, which is often stated to have a positive effect on concentration. While all this sounds great in theory these beneficial effects are directly tied to the game’s qualities as a game. All too often during the creation of a Serious Game most of the effort goes towards incorporating the learning contents and not enough towards the game’s quality as a game. This frequently leads to poor game design with frustrating game mechanics that end up negatively affecting both motivation and Immersion. This thesis explores the process of taking the existing Serious Game ’Dragon Tale’ and adapting it for better Immersion using an already existing Immersion model for Serious Games.
