Abstract

In the age of demographic change, developing new technology that can support elderly people gains more and more purpose. Technology has the potential to allow older adults to live independently and comfortably for a longer period of time. This new technology is called Ambient Assisted Living. It incorporates many different kinds of technology. One such kind of technology is wearable technology. Wearable technology can be worn close to the body of the user and can support the user through sensors and information. The MyCare application consists of two apps, an ios app, and a watchOS app. The application offers a variety of functions such as medication reminders or calling a caregiver. The main goal of the following thesis was to develop an user interface based on design guidelines for the watchOS app. Design guidelines give recommendations for aspects such as typography, color design, or interactive elements. Additionally, to widen the scope of the thesis, the number of use cases of the watch application was increased to, in turn, increase the number of areas of application. For this purpose, a calendar functionality and a liquid intake tracker were implemented. Additionally, the already existing request help function was reworked into a stand-alone functionality. The intended result was the creation of a comprehensive user interface with high usability for older adults. The developed prototype was tested by participants in a usability study. The participants were older age and were part of the target group of the MyCare application. The study showed promising results in terms of user satisfaction which in turn shows that older adults are open-minded towards wearable technology such as smartwatches. The average opinion considered the functionality and interface as helpful and comfortable to use.
