Abstract

The effect of Augmented Reality in Serious Games is a topic of interest as it is conjectured to have a lot of potential benefits for interactive and digital game-based environments. The 3D Serious Game DragonTale tries to harness those benefits to playfully teach the Japanese language. In the game, players must complete various story-centric tasks, learn different kanji and kana, and face various challenges to prove their knowledge. The game has been in development since 2017 and the focus of this practical course was a user study designed to compare an AR and a non-AR version of DragonTale. For this purpose a battle system, which was previously developed in a Bachelor Thesis, was integrated into the game. In the battle system, the player has to complete mini-games which consist of either translating or reading Kanji. This system was expanded by creating alternate AR input methods for the mini-games.
