Abstract

The topic of this bachelor thesis is the development of a tennis simulation in virtual reality (VR) using the Unity engine. It should recreate the experience of playing tennis in real life by making it fun, but also immersive while also considering the limitations of the virtual environment. Part of this goal can be achieved by implementing a tennis ball with realistic ball physics and by using haptic technology. This thesis concludes with a study, where participants were asked to test applications in VR and to provide feedback about their experience and the differences between virtual and real-life tennis. This should uncover potential improvements that can be made to create the best and most immersive tennis experience virtually. All in all, we found out that the design and implementation of the VR software with its ball physics is a big and important step towards the goal. However. it still comes with limitations that are responsible for the restricted level of immersion with one major issue being the absence of a real felt tennis racket. As a matter of fact, the implemented VR application and therefore this thesis is the groundwork set up for a bigger project which will involve a custom-built controller for VR devices that is supposed to give players a realistic sensation of holding and swinging a racket.
