Abstract

This paper addresses whether games are inclusive by reviewing existing literature on video games, accessibility, and gender. Our findings show that video games are, and have always been, designed with only one user in mind: a white, able-bodied, young male. We detail what game features exclude females and people with disabilities from enjoying gameplay and discuss adaptations that can improve this. We argue that this situation stems from the lack of diversity in the games industry. Hence, we also describe what makes the workspace less inviting for minorities and what changes should be made. We conclude with a framework that provides an overview of design decisions that are not biased towards any specific group of players.
