Abstract

As a result of aging, it is important for elderly people to perform exercises. Traditional exercises are not motivating enough for elderly to perform these on a regular basis. In order to motivate the older population, a gaming application for android devices focusing on walking exercises was created for this thesis. Because of their old age, many aspects such as physical, visual and cognitive limitations influence how the older target group experiences applications. The created game for this thesis addresses these issues and offers age friendly features. Additionally an augmented reality animal companion is implemented to provide a more interesting gaming experience. To test the effectiveness of such an application, participants over the age 60 years were asked to play and test the application. The results showed, that elderly people found the augmented reality idea interesting and wanted to find out more about future interactions with the animal companion. The tests also showed that many considerations and changes towards player safety need to be addressed for the augmented reality part of the game to avoid traffic accidents or other dangerous issues on the street.
