Abstract

With the increase in popularity of virtual environments in many different areas and their increasing complexity and size, effective navigation and wayfinding in them become more and more important. Therefore developers of such virtual environments need to incorporate supports to help the users to wayfind through complex virtual spaces. The goal of this thesis is to develop a framework for the Unity Engine that provides developers with a simple way to add several basic wayfinding supports to their projects. It wants to allow them to modify wayfinding supports to suit their needs and develop entirely new ones by giving build in methods to implement them more easily. To achieve this, already established wayfinding supports in video games were analyzed to get an understanding of what types of supports there are and what aspects of them should be depicted by the framework. After that, the requirements for the framework were derived from the analysis. Then the framework with the basic wayfinding aids and framework methods was implemented and a custom interface for the Unity editor was created for easily adding and modifying the supports. Lastly, the quality of the framework was discussed in regards to extent, flexibility and ease of use in the developing process. Based on that further improvements for future work was suggested.
