Abstract

Adaptive quest systems are one way of personalizing and potentially improving a player's experience in Role-Playing Games. This thesis explores different possibilities for constructing such systems on the basis of the existing research. This is done by first outlining both quests and adaptive systems in general. Then different existing approaches to developing adaptive quest systems are compared. Doing so also includes examining the integration of adaptive quest systems into Computer Role-Playing Games and different approaches to player modeling. This theoretical examination of the subject matter provides the basis for the development of a prototype of an adaptive quest system. This prototype aims at providing the player with quests that suit their preferences and is described in terms of abstract structure as well as concrete implementation.
