Abstract

Maritime helicopter operations are frequently conducted in degraded visual environments (DVEs), shipboard landings under these low visibility conditions can be significantly limited. With a head-tracking system, a see-through Helmet-Mounted Display (HMD) can offer the pilot a fusion of the synthetic references together with the outside cues in the gaze direction. This work develops a static 3D grid symbology displayed on HMD for visual augmentation, in order to assist pilots for hovering and landing in DVEs. Dynamic color for altitude cueing and blocking function against symbology overlapping were integrated into the symbology. SOAP landing tests were conducted with the Rotorcraft Simulation Environment (ROSIE) at the Institute of Helicopter Technology of TUM. Further trials with professional pilots in the future are expected.
