Abstract

This thesis first elaborates on existing research on and models of psychological wellbeing and its premises for the general population. Collecting findings that show negative trends regarding individuals’ mental health situation, also related to Corona pandemic, the troubling social and psychological circumstances of elderly people in western society, and Germany in particular, are addressed. As a possible way to approach this situation, digital technology is brought up. The mixed attitude of older adults towards these tools is then elaborated and discussed in order to find out whether mobile apps could be used to improve the psychological well-being of this target group. Then, by identifying important factors that influence well-being, a mobile app concept for elderly people is introduced and a prototype is implemented based on previous insights gained about seniors’ needs regarding technology. Finally, this app is evaluated by means of an online survey, collecting insights from caregivers and seniors. Within this context, the most relevant learnings are discussed and important aspects for future work are outlined.
