Gemäß der Promotionsordnung der TUM können Sie publikationsbasiert promovieren. § 21 der PromO 2021 gilt für alle Promovierenden, die eine publikationsbasierte Promotion veröffentlichen.
Wenn Sie vor dem 01.10.21 auf die Promotionsliste gekommen sind, gilt, für Sie die Promotionsordnung mit Wirkung vom 1. Januar 2014 gemäß Anlage 6 (im weiteren Text benannt als PromO 2012). D.h. diese Regelungen der PromO 2012 bezüglich publikationsbasierter Dissertationen haben Bestandsschutz.
Promovieren Sie nach der neuen Promotionsordnung mit Wirkung vom 01.10.21 gelten für Sie diese in der Promotionsordnung festgeschriebenen Anforderungen. Zusätzlich gilt die von der TUM School of Engineering and Design verabschiedete Richtline zu publikationsbasierten Promotionen.

According to the doctoral regulations of TUM, you can do a publication-based dissertation. § 21 of the doctoral regulations 2021 is relevant for all publication based dissertations.
If you were put on the doctoral candidates list before 01.10.21, the doctoral regulations with effect from 1 January 2014 apply to your dissertation in accordance with Annex 6 (in the further text named PromO 2012)
If you are doing your doctorate according to the new doctoral regulations with effect from 01.10.21, the requirements set out in these doctoral regulations apply to you. In addition, the guidelines for publication-based doctorates adopted by the TUM School of Engineering and Design apply.

- Falls Sie Fragen zur Anzahl und/oder der Wertigkeit Ihrer Publikationen haben, wenden Sie sich immer zuerst an Ihre*n Betreuer*in. Bei herausfordernden Fällen kann sich der/die Betreuer*in jederzeit an die Geschäftsleitung des GC-ED oder an den Promotionsbeirat direkt wenden.
- Rolle der/s Betreuer*in: Der oder die Betreuer*in entscheidet darüber, ob der oder die Promovierende mit der publikationsbasierten Promotion in ihrer Gesamtheit die Befähigung zu selbständiger wissenschaftlicher Arbeit nachweist und ist somit der/die einzig/e verlässliche Ansprechpartner*in für die individuelle publikationsbasierte Promotion.
- Umfang der Publikationen und Publikationsstadium: Die TUM Promotionsordnung schreibt eine Einbindung von mindestens 2 akzeptierten Publikationen vor. Der Statusnachweis „akzeptierter Artikel“ kann über den Schriftverkehr mit der Zeitschrift erfolgen. An der ED muss zusätzlich der Umfang der eingebundenen Publikationen (i.d.R. 2-3 akzeptierte Publikationen) und des zugehörigen Textteils dem entsprechenden Umfang einer Monographie gleichwertig sein. Diese Überprüfung geschieht im ersten Schritt vor der Einreichung der Promotion durch den/die Betreuer*in und im zweiten Schritt durch die Gutacher*innen der Prüfungskommission.
- Einreichung und Veröffentlichung: Die zur Publikation angenommenen und im Druck oder in elektronischen Zeitschriften erschienenen Veröffentlichungen sind der Dissertation als Appendix beizufügen. Laut den Richtlinien der ED können die Publikationen auch als Kapitel integriert werden. Für Prüfungszwecke müssen also alle Publikationen in voller Gänze eingereicht werden.
Wenn Sie die Promotion dann nach der mündlichen Prüfung veröffentlichen (§20 bzw. 21 der PromO), dann sind diese Publikationen von der Veröffentlichungspflicht ausgenommen. Das ist z.B. wichtig, falls die Zeitschrift einem Abdruck in der veröffentlichten Dissertation nicht zustimmen sollte. - Erst-/Mitautorenschaft: Auf mindestens zwei der eingebundenen Artikel muss der/die Promovierende Haupt- oder Erstautor*in sein und die Publikation federführend erarbeitet haben. Das bedeutet, dass er/sie maßgeblich zur Publikation beigetragen hat, ohne ihren/seinen Beitrag wäre die Publikation praktisch nicht entstanden.
Es muss in einer Erklärung dargelegt werden, welchen Beitrag und welche Teile der Publikation die einzelnen Autor*innen geleistet haben. Diese Erklärung ist von den Mitautor*innen zu unterschreiben. Hierzu gilt § 7 der Promotionsordnung von 2021 sowie unsere Richtlinien.
Tipps: Wir empfehlen dies auch für die publikationsbasierten Promotionen nach PromO 2012. Bei diesen muss nach Anhang 6 der individuelle Leistungsbeitrag hervorgehoben werden. Dieser entspricht letztendlich einer Aufstellung zu den Beiträgen der Mitautor*innen. Wir empfehlen Ihnen daher, immer die Aufstellung zu den Beiträgen der Mitautor*innen mit einzureichen.
Wann Sie als Autor*in federführend sind, besprechen Sie bitte mit Ihrem Betreuer / Ihrer Betreuerin, da wir die Arbeit bzw, die Veröffetnlichung nicht kennen. Weitere Details finden Sie in den FAQs. - Unbefangenheit der Gutachter*innen: Mindestens ein/e Gutachter*in muss bestellt werden, der/die auf keiner der Publikationen der Promotion Mitautor*in ist.
- Umfang der Publikationen, Publikationsstadium und Rang der Publikationen: Klären Sie Ihre Fragen hierzu mit Ihrer/m Betreuer*in. Der oder die Betreuer*in entscheidet darüber, ob der oder die Promovierende mit der publikationsbasierten Promotion in ihrer Gesamtheit die Befähigung zu selbständiger wissenschaftlicher Arbeit nachweist, ob die Ergebnisse im Rahmen der publikationsbasierten Promotion klar und verständlich dargestellt sind und ob die publikationsbasierte Promotion einen eigenen, neuen, weiterführenden und in sich zusammenhängenden wissenschaftlichen Beitrag leistet [§7(2) TUM Promotionsordnung (Satzung vom 23. 08. 2021)].

- If you have questions about the number and/or value of your publications, contact your supervisor first. In challenging cases, the supervisor can always contact the GC-ED management or the "Promotionsbeirat" directly.
- Role of the supervisor: The supervisor decides whether the doctoral candidate demonstrates the ability to conduct independent academic work with the publication-based doctorate in its entirety and is thus the only reliable contact person for the individual publication-based doctorate.
- Scope of publications and publication stage: The TUM doctoral degree regulations stipulate the inclusion of at least 2 accepted publications. Proof of the status of "accepted articles" can be provided by correspondence with the magazine. In addition, the scope of the publications included (usually 2-3 accepted publications) and the associated text section must be equivalent to the corresponding scope of a monograph. This check is done in the first step before the submission of the doctorate by the supervisor and in the second step by the reviewers of the examination board.
- Submission and publication: The publications accepted for publication and published in print or in electronic journals must be included in the dissertation as an appendix. According to the ED guidelines, the publications can also be integrated as chapters. For examination purposes, you must therefore submit all publications in their original entirety.
If you then publish the doctoral thesis after the oral examination (§20 or 21 of the PromO), then these publications are excluded from the obligation to publish. This is important, for example, if the journal does not agree to a reprint in the published dissertation. - First / co-authorship: The doctoral candidate must be the main or first author of at least two of the included articles and must have been the lead author of the publication. This means that he/she has made a significant contribution to the publication; without his/her contribution, the publication would not have been published.
A declaration must state what contribution and what parts of the publication the individual authors have made. This declaration must be signed by the co-authors. For this purpose have a look at §7 and our regulations as well.
Tips: We also recommend this for publication-based doctorates according to PromO 2012. For these doctorates, the individual performance contribution must also be highlighted according to Annex 6. This ultimately corresponds to a list of the contributions of the co-authors. We therefore recommend that you always submit the list of co-authors' contributions.
Please discuss with your supervisor whether you are the leading author, as we do not know the thesis or the publication. For further details please check the FAQs. - Impartiality of the reviewers: At least one reviewer must be appointed who is not a co-author of any of the doctoral publications.
- Scope of publications, publication stage and ranking of the publications: Please clarify any questions you may have with your supervisor. The supervisor decides whether the doctoral candidate with the publication-based doctorate in its entirety proves the ability to do independent academic work, whether the results of the publication-based doctorate are presented clearly and understandably and whether the publication-based doctorate has its own, a new, advanced and coherent scientific contribution [§7 (2) TUM doctoral degree regulations (regulations of August 23, 2021)].
