The following page summarizes information about the examination regulations as well as exam registration.

You can also have a look into our study regulations and the English short version that summarizes all important parts in our documents section.

Examination Dates

Examination dates are announced in the courses and can also be found on TUMonline.

If you have questions about examinations, please contact your corresponding course coordinator.

Exam Registration

Course enrolment and exam registration are usually not connected. Thus, if you want to take an exam for a course you're taking, you have to specifically register for that exam.

Please consider the following registration periods in TUMonline:

Winter term:

1st to 31st January

Summer term:

1st to 31st July

Registration after deadline is not possible!

These periods may not be valid for some elective courses, which are held e.g. as a block course.

Registration Procedure

Please refer to the detailed explanation given in the TUMonline Wiki.

  • Click on "Study status/Curriculum" in your TUMonline profile card. Do not use "Exam registration"! (You can easily register for the wrong examination, as we got examinations with the same name and date, which are valid only for other study programs!) Click on your study program and choose the desired examination from your schedule (tree structure) and register.
  • Please note: The flags in this tree structure have got the following meaning:
    • orange: indicates a module which consists out of
    • red: lectures – and
    • green: examinations.
  • If you wish to register for an examination which is not part of the COME program, select "Exam registration" in your TUMonline profile card. Here you can search for the relevant examination and register by clicking on the "Register" button. If you would like to get credits for it, you should contact the course coordinator and clarify, whether the course can be accredited within the 9 “free” elective credits. Do not use this possibility for courses which are part of the COME program!

German Grading System

Marks at German Universities are issued on a scale from 1.0 to 5.0, where 1.0 is the best achievable mark and 4.0 is the passing mark.

Usually one needs to solve 40% - 50% of the tasks correctly in order to pass an examination. The mark 1.0 is usually issued above 80% - 90% correct answers. There are no fixed percentages of correct answers for the calculation of the marks in order to cope with slight changes in the difficulty of the examinations.

Falied examinations can be repeated as often as necessary until the examination is passed. Failed examinations will not be shown on your transcript.

Study Progress

The study regulations prescribe certain milestones you have to reach in the corresponding semesters. The following list summarizes the necessary number of creits you have to have passed after each semester, starting from the third semester.

  • minimum of 30 credits after 3 semesters
  • minimum of 60 credits after 4 semesters
  • minimum of 90 credits after 5 semesters
  • minimum of 120 credits after 6 semesters

This effectively limits the maximum duration of study to 6 semesters. Please also consider that you have to pass at least one compulsory module until the end of the second semester.

Academic Recognition

The application for a recognition of a former performance (before your studies of CoMe at TUM) must be submitted during the first year of your studies according to General Academic and Examination Regulations (APSO) §16 subsection (4) sentence 3.
