Abstract
As video games have arguably become as big as, if not bigger than, movies in terms of production scales, learning from cinematic techniques has also become more relevant and practical. We investigate the potential of applying certain shot types, tricks, and ideas to immersive video games. After an introduction to the basic principles and technical aspects of shooting moving images, we explain the setup of our prototype, which we then use to visualize certain scenarios. This explanation includes an overview of the more general decisions that have to be made during implementation, such as frame rates and shutter speeds, first person versus third person, et cetera. Then we dive into a few scenarios that were chosen to demonstrate the things to consider when adapting specific shots to video games, how to work around the major problems, and how we can further improve them aesthetically. Though our implementations focus on 3D experiences, the core concepts we discuss can apply to a variety of video game genres and graphical styles.
