Abstract

The market of multiplayer first-person shooters is growing every year, with more and more different titles being released. Every one of these has its own special rules and gameplay features, as well as its own specific array of levels to play on. These work in tandem with the game rules and gameplay features to make sure the players play the game as is intended by encouraging and enforcing certain rules and habits. Four design patterns are created within this analysis, which can be used to design certain parts of the level in different ways. These are then compared with five different FPS titles, all with their own specific rules and gameplay features, to show the areas affected by the design patterns are a reason why levels are played the way developers intend.
