Abstract

With the demographic change moving towards an ever advancing proportion of elderly in our society, the problems of decreasing health as well as nursing staff shortage are on their rise. A way to prevent and reduce health problems, especially in an older age, is to provide the body with the appropriate nutrition. One promising approach to draw attention to this subject and transmit knowledge of basic nutritional science are electronically augmented card games. These games combine the advantages of familiar physical card games with those of virtual applications. In this thesis an electronically augmented card game for autonomic learning of basic nutritional science for senior citizens is being developed. Needed physical compounds are created and assembled. A link between the physical and virtual components is being implemented. With consideration of elaborated guidelines, a suitable virtual application is designed for senior citizens. An evaluation using a questionnaire at two different senior nursing homes demonstrates the project’s shortcomings and benefits. Results indicate higher potential for healthier senior citizens than more impaired ones, as the complexity of the game is assessed as high by most participants. The physical components are highly accepted and work reliably, along with the bluetooth connection. The touchscreen is accepted well as there are no issues with recognizing game objects on the tablet. The buttons are clearly distinguishable and of a suitable size to prevent input mistakes.
