Game Concept
Colorblocker is a 3D Puzzle-Platformer game. Gravity pillars are placed throughout the cube-shaped world, which allow the player to switch their gravity direction. This completely transforms the level and opens new paths towards the goal. Additionally, each gravity direction is associated with a biome and gives the player a different special ability like punching obstacles or having a cat dig up objects from the ground. The goal of the game is to reach the center of the level and acquire the Legendary Shining Catnip.

Milestone Plan:
Task | Date |
---|---|
First level blockout | 26.12.22 |
First prototype for testing | 02.01.23 |
Level Decoration | 01.02.23 |
Final Polishing | 07.02.23 |
Testing setup
For easier testing, a continuous integration pipeline was used in addition to a Discord Server where testers were automatically notified once a new version was released.
In addition, the project was present at the Pizza Playtest.
Level Prototype
In this prototype, various Level Design patterns were already incorporated. The special focus on the first half was to teach the player, the focus of the second half was to combine abilities and make complex puzzles.
Results
The final version uses various assets from the Unreal Engine Marketplace. In addition, it utilizes Unreal Engine's realtime global illumination system Lumen as well as an outline shader and Cell Shading.
The music used was composed specifically for the project by Jiro Yoshioka.
A lot of feedback from playtesters was incorporated. For example, the game now has an icon showing the player's current ability.
Tools
Tools developed include various asset-placement-tools, a procedural foliage tool that is compatible with different gravity directions, a snapping tool and a Continuous Integration Pipeline for testing
