Abstract

The game asset pipeline is the path every asset takes, starting at its creation and ending with the asset as it is observed in the final build of the game. The question guiding this paper was if it is possible to develop tools that are part of the game asset pipeline to aid the level design process. Specifically it proposes eight processes that can be executed for any asset, at the point where it is imported into the game engine. In addition to that a system to manage what process should be performed on what asset is also introduced. This proposal was then tested and refined by actually implementing it for the Unity Game Engine. Not all eight processes could be implemented. The result was that the created system not only helps game designers but also developers and tech artists that work with the asset pipeline, resulting in a shift of the tools focus from what was originally intended. During development it also came up that the user interface as implemented could be improved by creating a node based graph editor to enable easy, intuitive and visual customization of the import process of a game engine. Examples, mock up, and a description of how such an editor can look are proposed towards the end of the paper.
