Abstract
In this work, we develop two versions of a simulation to help teachers learn a specific teaching method for children with autism. One version uses virtual reality, the other augmented virtuality. For the AV simulation, we develop a pose estimation pipeline that can be utilized in a variety of applications and is quickly reusable on different systems for different objects. To enable object tracking of multiple 3D-printed objects simultaneously, we use a non-learning pose estimation algorithm that tracks objects based on their contours. We show that this tracking approach is suitable for use in AR and AV, and propose ideas for future pipeline research. The VR simulation is a follow-up to a research project at Reykjavik University, where VR was used to teach this particular teaching method. Our VR implementation was developed to replace the existing version and help train special educators in Iceland.
