Abstract

Obstacles for air traffic are often not distinguishable enough for pilots. In poor visibility conditions objects like buildings without warning lights, power lines or mountains are hard to detect. This thesis investigates the implementation of obstacle highlighting using augmented reality technology (AR). To test the hypothesis that AR is able to improve the situation, the terrain map of Bavaria was visualized using an already existing framework on the HoloLens and its technological limitations were analyzed. The results show that displaying the terrain in a non-intrusive way is possible although long loading times are problematic even for smaller terrain fragments. The results suggest that this approach should be further pursued while at the same time computational performance needs to be improved.
