Abstract
The goal of this thesis is to develop a chess-based serious game for people with dementia. At first, multiple chess variants are analyzed, which use a smaller board with less pieces, and a new variant is created. Then the game is implemented and provides different scenarios with multiple levels, as well as an artificial intelligence opponent that create an opportunity for people with various stages of dementia to improve their cognitive skills. For additional support, a companion helps the player by giving useful information and tips on how to accomplish the current task. The games’ visual appearance can be tailored to any patient and preference by adjusting the board color theme or changing between 2D and 3D modes. Custom conductive physical chess pieces lighten the interaction of the player with the touchscreen. In the end, a scenario-based evaluation is given and conclusions are drawn.
