TUM requires the proof of basic German knowledge upon matriculation. For that, we require a certificate that you attended and passed a German course of level A1.1 or higher.

We accept, among others, the following proofs of German language proficiency:

  • courses at the TUM Sprachenzentrum
  • Deutschkurse bei der Universität München e.V.
  • courses at institutes like the Goethe Institut
  • courses you took in your home country or during your Bachelor's studies before coming to Munich. Please note that sometimes your proof of German language proficiency which you uploaded in the application portal has been overlooked in the evaluation of your application. If you are not sure whether the proof you uploaded has been overlooked or is not valid, please contact your course coordinator.

You can also find a comprehensive overview of courses provided by the Studentenwerk.

If you haven't submitted a certificate upon matriculation, you can do so until the end of the second semester, as stated on your acceptance letter. This deadline is very strict and cannot be altered by us, so please make sure you have attended a course or passed a test by the end of your second semester. To fulfill the requirement of German language proficiency, please send your proof to the examination adminstrator.
