LRZ project

In order to properly manage the CPU-hours budget allocated to you on the C2PAP cluster, it will be necessary to have exactly one LRZ project. To avoid confusion, note that having an LRZ project does not imply that you have any C2PAP computing budget. But if you have the latter, you need an LRZ project to which the C2PAP admin can assign this budget. Therefore, it is not possible to use one LRZ project for multiple C2PAP projects.

In case you don't have such an LRZ project yet, please apply for a new LRZ project using this form https://doku.lrz.de/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=27394058&preview=/27394058/60102098/Projektantrag-202009.pdf:

  • "nicht steuerbar", no need for "Rechnungsanschrift"
  • most likely you are Nutzerklasse 1
  • indicate C2PAP under "Gewünschte Dienste - andere Dienste"
  • assign a master user, usually one of the investigators
  • you need a signature from the head of your institute, could be a director of a Max Planck institute, or the head of a chair at the university, a group leader is not sufficient. The head need not be part of your project but of course he/she should know you.

Depending on your department, you need to send the form then to one of these LRZ contact persons https://doku.lrz.de/display/PUBLIC/Zuordnung+von+Einrichtungen+zu+LRZ-Betreuern

Once the LRZ project is created, a master user will be able to create user accounts within your project via the LRZ idportal; see https://www.lrz.de/wir/kennung/ for more infos.

Note that these accounts are also eligible to use the LRZ "Linux cluster".

Login

Access to the currently available computational resources is possible using the LRZ associated to the project (in the form xxyyyzz) and establishing an SSH connection to cool.hpc.lrz.de:

ssh -Y cool.hpc.lrz.de -l xxyyyzz

Outgoing connections

Outgoing ssh connections on the login node are currently not allowed since the hacker attack in 2020.

Two Factor Authentication (2FA)

Since 18th Septemeber 2023, logins to the linux cluster require two factor authentication. That is, the user must supply a password, then a token response obtained from a dedicated app on a mobile device.

To setup 2FA one can refer to the LRZ documentation: https://doku.lrz.de/two-factor-authentication-on-the-linux-cluster-11484383.html

Briefly, the steps to follow are:

  1. Register/login at https://simmfa.sim.lrz.de
  2. Select enroll token from menu on the left
  3. Install app via QR code or playstore link
  4. Enroll a new token with default entries. DO NOT create a PIN
  5. Scan the additional QR code to link your phone app with the enrolled token
  6. When logging in to the linux cluster, run the app to obtain the token response
  7. In case of problems, raise a LRZ service ticket at https://servicedesk.lrz.de/

Access to general TUM Network-attached storage (NAS)

Details about access to the TUM NAS in general are presented at Network_Storage. To make it work on the C2PAP login node, use

$ dbus-launch bash
$ gvfs-mount $location
