How to use an Oscilloscope?

Google “how to use an oscilloscope” and you will probably find a million replies. Note that we have digital oscilloscopes, whereas most tutorials are explicitly for analog scopes. Although the basic principles are the same, you need to know about distinct differences to use a digital scope properly, so be cautious!

Here is an extensive document that addresses both analog and digital scopes: http://www.hobbyprojects.com/oscilloscope_tutorial.html

And here are beginner's documents that explain everything you need to know about scopes.
Unfortunately, they refer to a different brand; therefore you need to transfer principles to our scopes!

Details on Probes (this is probably only relevant is you measure complicated signals)

  • After power up always check settings! Do not assume that the last person has left reasonable settings for your project!

Mixed Signal Oscilloscope HAMEG HMO3524

Webpage: HAMEG HMO3524

The oscilloscope is permanently installed in the Micro Mechanic Toolshop. DO NOT MOVE TO YOUR DESK!
(if you need to borrow an oscilloscope to work at your desk take one of the two scopes below!).

The HAMEG HMO3524 is an oscilloscope with many different functions. In addition to the “normal” functions of an oscilloscope, it also provides various mathematical functions (i.e. ADD, SUB, DIV, LOG, …) and analyze functions (i.e. FFT, Mean Voltage, Rise-time, Fall-time, …). Furthermore, it has logic channel inputs which can be used with so-called probes (picture on the top right) to detect bus signals. These bus signals can then also be analyzed, i.e. the data sent by the bus can be displayed in HEX.

Short Overview

  • 4GSa/s Real-time, 50GSa/s Random sampling, low noise flash A/D converter (reference class)
  • Vertical sensitivity 1mV/div., Offset control ±0.2…±20V
  • 12div. x-axis display range, 20div. y-axis display range
  • 4 Channels for analog inputs
  • Trigger modes: slope, video, pulse width, logic, delayed, event
  • Up to 16 logic probes to trigger and decode bus signals I2C, SPI, UART/RS-232
  • Mathematics functions: ADD, SUB, 1/X, ABS, MUL, DIV, POS, NEG, INV, INTG, DIFF, SQR, MIN, MAX, LOG, LN
  • Frequency analysis (FFT)
  • 3xUSB for mass storage, printer and remote control optional IEEE-488 or Ethernet /USB

Hints and Tips

  • in trigger mode, when selecting “single run” you need to manually deactivate auto-trigger before a single run occurs (red button)

OWON PDS 5022S

This is a cheap and simple 2 channel 25MHz (100MS/s) oscilloscope!
If you want to take a scope to your desk take this (instead of Hameg DSO)!

The scope features a built-in battery for several hours of autonomy.
Reconnect to the power line in the lab and switch on for re-charging!

Hints and Tips

  • the scope needs to be turned on to charge the internal battery. Leave running over night to ensure a full charge
