Since 01.01.2021, the child benefit for the first and second child is 219 EUR per month, for the third child it is 225 EUR and for the fourth and each further child 250 EUR per month.

The "Familienkassen/Child Benefit Offices are responsible for child benefit for employees in the public sector. However, for civil servants in the public sector, the child benefit is applied for from the Landesfamilienkasse of the Landesamt für Finanzen (LfF) and is paid directly to the entitled person each month together with the salary.


How to apply for child benefit as a civil servant or employee in the public sector?

  1. Fill in the form Antrag auf Kindergeld and the annex Anlage Kind
  2. Send the forms together with copy of birth certificate to the Landesfamilienkasse
  3. If you are not coming from an EU/EW-Country or Switzerland, please enclose your residence permit.

Child benefit in cross-boarder cases

If you or the other parent is holding an EU/EW or Switz Nationility or is still living in one of those countries, you can receive child benefit in a cross-boarder case. In such cases, it is examined whether a reduction or a differential amount is to be paid.

  1. Fill in the form Antrag auf Kindergeld and the annex Anlage Kind
  2. Fill in the form Anlage Ausland
  3. Copy of the foreign birth certificate. If you have another official document certifying the birth of your child, you can also use this as proof.

However, in cross-border cases where supranational legislation is applicable to the to the applicant or to another parent, there are Family Benefits Offices with special
responsibilities.

Mandatory requirement for the receipt of child benefit

For new applications for child benefit, your tax identification number and the tax identification number of your child/children must always be stated immediately on the application form. For allocation within the Landesfamilienkasse (family benefits office of the LfF) or the other family benefits office responsible for you, it is always necessary to state your complete reference number (see child assessment notice or, alternatively, your payslip).
