Why Core Facility?

Why is this beneficial for individual research units?

Of course, single research units could afford devices, e.g. a high performance ergometer (acquisition costs ca. 30.000-50.000€) individually via 3^rd party funding. Such devices cause annual costs of ca. 1000-2000€, excluding defects! It is tough for single research units, to take care for such devices constantly. And what happens if there is major defect? Or the device is not perfectly suitable for the following research projects and you wish to have a more suitable/specialized one? Or you need more than one high-cost devices and your third-party funder says that your material costs are too high?

One option to challenge those issues is shared use. This what the Core Facility aims for. We buy devices on request and initiatives of individual research units but provide them to all possible users. The Core Facility takes the costs for maintenance and the financial risks, on the other hand, any single user must contribute to the costs via fees.

We try to calculate the fees as fair, easy and affordable as possible:

• We calculate only costs that are directly caused by the usage of the device. This includes:
  • Provision costs
    • All resources and consumables which are necessary to hand-over the device in functioning condition
    • Costs for calibration if applicable
  • Costs for re-invest, infrastructure and administration are not included
• We set up an agreement together with you where we define the concrete usage
  • Example: 30 Subjects x 0.5h per Subject = 15h using time

Please support us by providing realistic and honest usage-estimates for your studies! Get in touch with us before your submit your funding application! In this way, we can keep our fair and affordable fees!

I want to conduct research with a device from the Prevention Center. Which steps are required?

Device-usage is subject to charges. Please use the Research option in the booking system. Please register your project before you submit your proposal for external funding!

1. Register as new user (If this is the first time you use our booking sytem)
2. Register your project
   1. Do you have funding or is the measurement a service for an external partner? Please ask for a cost estimate (prevention-pz.sg@tum.de)
   2. You are a phD student without funding? Your projects may be funded by the department. please write an application to the local research officer.
3. Sign the collaboration agreement
4. Book devices or rooms

I want to conduct a pilot experiment?

Piloting is free of charges. Please use the Research option in the booking system. Select the “Pilot” option and you will receive an individual pilot-study ID.

Please be fair and request an regular project-ID as soon as you have funding!

Please note that we can not provide you with consumables free of charge even for pilot experiments!

 I want to conduct or supervise a degree thesis or want to use the device for teaching?

There device-usage is free of charges. Please use the Teaching option in the booking system.

2. Only for degree theses: Register your thesis. 
3. Book devices or rooms

Please Note: The PZ equipment may only be used after proper introduction (signed!). The Introduction can be provided as part of your seminars by your lecturer or by PZ Staff. Please note that the PZ will not provide Introducitons for some methods depending on individual qualification level:

• CPET: Only for master-level students who enrolled to corresponding modules
• Lactate analysis: Only after consultation of TUM company doctor for risk disclosure for work with biological samples (subject to fees!) 
• motor driven dynamometry (ISOMED/Desmotronic): Only for master-level students
• VICON: Only for master-level students who enrolled to corresponding modules

Please Note: All Studies are checked by the PZ Board for complience with the lab safety concept!
