2.3.2.  Options, timing and extent

You can choose the timing of your stay abroad yourself, within certain limits, taking into account your individual course of study. In general, a stay abroad is only recommended after successfully completing any mandatory courses. In addition, many partner universities require a minimum of 120 ECTS credits before the start of the stay. As a rule, a stay abroad is therefore possible from the 4th semester at the earliest and reasonable from the 5th semester onwards. The duration of the stay abroad is usually one semester.

2.3.3. Selection of partner institution

An overview of all TUM partner universities with relevant information can be found in the Global Experiences database. The database is organized according to the subject areas of the TUM Schools. In principle, only the partner institutions of the TUM School of Engineering and Design (ED) in the subject area relevant to your degree programme are available to you. Therefore, please ensure that you use the appropriate filters.

The selection of the host university should be made carefully. Select only those universities that are indeed suitable destinations for you. In addition to the TUM database, please study the information media (website) of the partner university in depth. Before submitting your application, please check the following questions in particular:

  • Are the lecture and examination times at the partner university compatible with your TUM study programme?
  • Does the available range of courses meet your needs?
  • Are your language skills in the respective language sufficient, and do they meet the requirements of the partner university?
  • Does your study progress/level meet the requirements of the partner university (minimum number of credits, bachelor's/master's degree requirements)?

2.3.4. Language certificates and language courses

In principle, the requirements of the host university apply, which may also depend on the type of stay abroad and the choice of degree programme and courses. Please refer to the partner university's website or make a direct enquiry to the partner university's International Office. The Global Experiences database may also contain information on the required language level. Generally, a language level of at least B1 or B2 is required for the main language of instruction at the time of application to the host university.

A list of commonly accepted language certificates can be found here. For native speakers, proof of citizenship is usually sufficient.

The TUM Language Centre offers numerous language courses, language tests and courses on intercultural communication to help you prepare for your stay abroad.

2.3.5. Module selection, study plan, semester of leave

A study plan (https://www.international.tum.de/global/erasmusstudium/ → Downloads) is required for numerous international programmes, which is a in principle non-binding indication of the subjects you would like to take abroad.

When choosing modules, please pay particular attention to the information provided by the partner university on its information channels. This also applies to the question of whether you, as a Bachelor's student, can also take Master's modules and vice versa (this is generally not relevant for the creditability for your TUM degree programme. In addition, experience reports can also be helpful.

It is your responsibility to check whether the semester and examination periods at the partner university, which often differ from those at TUM, are compatible with your individual study and examination schedule at TUM. Please understand that ED International Office is unable to coordinate this with the partner university or TUM departments.

Please discuss with the ED International Office, your departmental academic advisor and/or the examination administration office for your degree programme whether a leave of absence is advisable or even necessary. Here you will find further information on semester of leave.

Term papers and final theses can also be written during a stay abroad. However, they must be co-supervised and assessed by a TUM examiner who is approved to provide topics for your degree programme. Please make sure you arrange this supervision in good time. In this case, you will also have to organise your stay largely independently.

2.3.6. Course recognition, entry in the Diploma Supplement

2.3.6.1. Course recognition

Most study programmes have module areas with a high degree of freedom of choice (e.g. ‘Interdisciplinary Modules’, ‘Free Electives’, ‘Supplementary Courses’, ‘Engineering Flexibility’, ‘Partner University Elective Modules’, ‘Mobility Window’). Often, the responsible examination board has decided to recognise modules from other universities within defined limits generally for these module areas. In this case, there is no formal recognition for a module defined in the curriculum (1:1 recognition), but rather the externally acquired module itself is incorporated into the corresponding module area.

There is no database with information about which modules have been successfully recognised in the past.

Recognition must be applied for in the semester following the stay abroad.

Credits earned abroad can only be brought into module blocks of the curriculum that have not yet been fully completed by other credits already earned.

The further recognition procedures may vary between the different degree programmes. Therefore, please note the guidelines below for the subject area relevant to your degree programme.

Should you still have questions after carefully reading all the information, please contact the person responsible for recognitions. You can usually find them in the degree program wiki under “Kontakte / Contacts”.

Please also refer to (Online) Learning Agreement.

2.3.6.1.1. Aerospace
2.3.6.1.1.1. B.Sc. Aerospace

Free Elective:
Modules from other universities (e.g., from a stay abroad) can generally be recognized, provided that these modules clearly impart engineering skills. In cases of doubt, the PA Aerospace will decide.

Optional Engineering Elective:
Modules worth 5 credits can generally be recognized, provided that these modules clearly impart engineering skills. In cases of doubt, the PA Aerospace will decide..

Supplementary Courses:
Modules worth 6 credits can generally be recognized, provided that these modules clearly impart engineering skills. In cases of doubt, the PA Aerospace will decide.

If the module completed abroad is to be included in a module area other than the freely selectable module areas, a module with corresponding content must be identified from the TUM B.Sc. Aerospace curriculum. Students must contact the module coordinator independently and directly in order to obtain a non-binding assessment of the module's eligibility for recognition (in particular, content equivalence) before their stay abroad.

2.3.6.1.1.2. M.Sc. Aerospace

Up to 15 credits from the Master's modules – Engineering Flexibility can generally be recognized, provided that the modules to be recognized clearly impart engineering skills and are worth approximately 5 ECTS credits.

Up to 9 credits (3 x 3 credits) from the area of supplementary subjects can generally be recognized, provided that the module to be recognized clearly imparts engineering skills.

2.3.6.1.2. Interdisciplinary Engineering (Engieering Science)
2.3.6.1.2.1. B.Sc. Engineering Science

Elective area 2 in particular offers good opportunities for recognizing credits earned abroad due to the freedom of choice it allows.

It is also important that you consider your study tree and do not lose sight of your focus on a later master's degree.

Further information on recognition options can be found here.

Please note that the international coordinators cannot comment further on the creditability of courses completed abroad. The examination board of your degree program is formally responsible for this. If you have any questions, please contact the person responsible for the recognition of your degree program (Contacts - IE).

2.3.6.2. Entry in the Diploma Supplement

Study periods abroad organised through TUM (TUMexchange, ERASMUS+) are automatically included in the Diploma Supplement.

Self-organised stays abroad (free movers) can be added to the Diploma Supplement upon request: Freemovers - Registration of self-organized stays abroad - TUM Global
