What is TUM DataTagger?

Your solution for collaborative and efficient research data management at TUM.

Simply add information to your data.

This empowers your scientific data

by you and your collaborators - now and also in five or ten years.

Have a common file storage for you and your project partners, and define how the project's data should be described.

Start with an initial storage limit of 50 GB per user, which can be expanded as needed upon request.

08.04.2026 Release of Version Aquamarine

The new version of TUM DataTagger makes your data documentation even more efficient and flexible. Check out the latest features:

  • Metadata templates for single files

→ Select a template from your folder´s template pool and apply it to a subset of files in your folder

  • Flexible metadata templates 

→ Make changes to a template that is already in use and upgrade your data with these changes

  • Field type "Multi select"

→ Select several metadata values from one field  

  • Field type "Tag"

→ Provide in a template selectable tags

→ Add freely any additional tags to your file(s) 

  • Fill-in guidance

→ Provide information on how to fill in the metadata field 


12.02.2026 Description field for projects and folders

  • Description field for projects and folders is now directly visible (Tab "Details" has been removed)

→ Provide information about the project or on how to collaborate in the folder


19.12.2025 New wordings

Thanks to your feedback, we realized that some wordings were a bit unclear. Therefore we changed:

  • "Assign (to folder)" → "Move (to folder)" or "Add"
  • "Edit" (in the Metadata template tab) → "Activate"

 If you find any further unclear wordings, please let us know (via datatagger@ub.tum.de or the Wish list).


02.12.2025 New features for metadata templates

  • Metadata template pools for projects and folders

→ As a project or folder admin, you can now create a selection (pool) of metadata templates to be used in a project or folder

  • Versioning of metadata templates

You realize that you need an older version of your template again? No problem!

→ Go back to the older version and restore it.

  • Change tracking for metadata templates as well as for files and their metadata

→ Activate “Show changes” in an older version of your template or file and see how it differs from the newest version.

  • Ordering of metadata fields

→ Change the order of metadata fields according to your needs.

  • Indicator for missing metadata values

Easily get an overview of which files need more documentation. Files having missing values in required metadata fields are indicated by a yellow “Missing metadata”-indicator.


02.12.2025 New feature: Metadata Export and Import

→ Export all metadata of a file (in json format) and re-use this collection of metadata for a new file in the “My draft files” area.

08.07.2025 New feature: Bulk actions

You want to add metadata to several files at once? Just check out our new bulk actions in the "My draft files" area. 

→ Activate "Bulk edit", select files, and assign metadata

Also applicable for deleting files or transferring files into a folder.


15.05.2025 New feature: Example metadata template

A globally available example for a metadata template has been added. It shows all possible types of metadata fields.

Please do not activate it in your projects or folders! It should only provide an overview on the functionalities and field types.


06.05.2025 New feature: Search filter for file lists

The latest release (v1.1.4 Amethyst) gives you the possibility to filter your file lists by a name or metadata value.

Just type in a word in the search bar above your file list!
