Overview Curriculum

Credits represent points awarded for work completed successfully in a given module (Credits are commonly referred to as credit points, ECTS points, CP or ECTS credit points).
The greater the total student workload required to complete a module, the higher the number of credits the module is assigned. The rule is: 1 Credit ≙ 30 hrs student workload.

Figure 1 shows an exemplary overview of the courses. All courses can be attended in any order; however, compulsory courses are strongly recommended to be taken in the first semester.

Risk Lab

Goal and nature of the Risk Lab

Students of the Master’s program Risk and Safety must accomplish the Risk Lab within their studies. The Risk Lab is conducted in the form of a project work. The main goal of the project is for students to collect experience in an application context. This can be as part of a research project or in cooperation with a company. Two basic requirements must be fulfilled:

  • a clear contribution to the student’s qualification as a risk manager
  • the use of risk and safety assessment tools and methods

The Project can be done individually or in teams of 2 students. The workload of the project must reflect requirements of 12 credits per student. Each credit is equivalent to a workload of 30 hours.

Duration and Deadlines

There is no fixed maximum duration for the Risk Lab project. Only the workload requirements must be fulfilled.

The report of the Risk Lab must be completed and submitted before the start of the Master’s thesis.

Supervision

The project can either be carried out externally in cooperation with a private company or a public authority or as part of a project at one of the chairs involved in the M.Sc. Risk and Safety or it. An academic supervisor from a chair involved in the master Risk and Safety is mandatory.

Examination form

The students have to compose a written report on their project and submit it to their supervisor. The students must give a short presentation (15 min for projects of one student, 20 min for projects of two students) of their project. The presentation takes place at a joint conference with all the other projects that finish in the same semester. The conference is organized once per semester. The registration to the converence is via TUM-Online simular to the registration of exams. At the time of the presentation, the project work must not yet be completed; however, it must be finalized at maximum one month after the presentation.

The weighting of report and presentation in the overall grade are: 80% Report, 20% Presentation.

Registration and grade submission

Projects are not registered since there is no necessity for monitoring their duration. The examiner must only submit the grading after the project is concluded. The following data are required for the examination management:

  • Name and matriculation No. of the student
  • Title of the project
  • Date of grading
  • Overall grade

The data must be sent by the supervising chair, signed by the responsible examiner, to the examination officer max.teichgraeber@tum.de.

Recognition of courses

Courses successfully completed at other universities can be recognized. For this purpose we ask you to fill out this form.

Examination Dates

Examination dates are announced in the courses and can also be found on TUMonline.

If you have questions about examinations, please contact your corresponding course coordinator.

Exam Registration

Course enrolment and exam registration are usually not connected. Thus, if you want to take an exam for a course you're taking, you have to specifically register for that exam.

Please consider the following registration periods in TUMonline:

Winter term:

1st to 31st January

Summer term:

1st to 31st July

Registration after deadline is not possible!

These periods may not be valid for some elective courses, which are held e.g. as a block course.

Registration Procedure

Please refer to the detailed explanation given in the TUMonline Wiki.

  • Click on "Study status/Curriculum" in your TUMonline profile card. Do not use "Exam registration"! (You can easily register for the wrong examination, as we got examinations with the same name and date, which are valid only for other study programs!) Click on your study program and choose the desired examination from your schedule (tree structure) and register.
  • Please note: The flags in this tree structure have got the following meaning:
    • orange: indicates a module which consists out of
    • red: lectures – and
    • green: examinations.

German Grading System

Marks at German Universities are issued on a scale from 1.0 to 5.0, where 1.0 is the best achievable mark and 4.0 is the passing mark.

Usually one needs to solve 40% - 50% of the tasks correctly in order to pass an examination. The mark 1.0 is usually issued above 80% - 90% correct answers. There are no fixed percentages of correct answers for the calculation of the marks in order to cope with slight changes in the difficulty of the examinations.

Falied examinations can be repeated as often as necessary until the examination is passed. Failed examinations will not be shown on your transcript.

Graduation

Upon finial completion of all compulsory modules (including Master's thesis) and having obtained 120 credits in total, you have successfully complete the Master's program.

Here is some information that might be important for you.

  • You will stay enrolled during the semester in which you have passed your final exam. You will be exmatriculated by the end of that semester. Please also see this TUM page on withdrawal from university.
  • You don't need to actively deregister from TUM.
  • You will receive your final degree certificate, transcript of records and a ranking table by the central offices. You can find more information on your final graduation documents, please visit https://www.tum.de/en/studies/graduation/documents.
