Short description of the WPS standard

The OGC Web Processing Service (WPS) specification provides rules for standardizing how inputs and outputs (requests and responses) for geospatial (and also non-geospatial) processing services. These services can be very simple functions like polygon overlay but can also be as complex as the simulation of solar irradiation on building surfaces or the estimation of building energy demands. The standard defines how a client can request the execution of a process, and how the output from the process is handled. It defines an interface that facilitates the publishing of processes and clients’ discovery of and binding to those processes. The data required by the WPS can be delivered across a network or they can be available at the server.

The Role of WPS in SDDI

  • general description of the purpose and usage of the WPS in SDDI

Currently, no own WPS is operated within the SSD project.

Implementations / Products

The following selection of products was made by the SDDI team and includes those implementations which are (or likely will be) used in the SSD project and from which we know that they are compatible with the requirements of the Smart Sustainable Data Infrastructure. Please note that the list is not a complete list of available or suitable WPS implementations. The Open Geospatial Consortium provides a catalog of implementations of their standards which can be found at http://www.opengeospatial.org/resource. Note that also the OGC list is not complete and not necessarily completely up-to-date.
