Background: The AI + Automation Lab, BR Data und BR Recherche are three teams at BR that work at the interface between technology and journalism. They use forms of automation and AI for investigative methods as well as for product development of journalistic formats such as automated texts, graphics, news briefings. A Journalism Tech Hub aims to make this work connectable: What models the teams are training could be used by other media outlets? What training data from public-service broadcasting could be useful to other institutions with a social mission?

The Workshop: The workshop centers on researchers showing each other the projects and methods they are working on in short pitches and subsequently explore possible collaborations on use cases and methods.

Themes of interest

  • Work with language models (fine-tuning, testing) for text services for journalists
  • Training of a dialect language model
  • Data to Text, Data to Graphics projects
  • Automated fragmentation of audios
  • Automated tagging of audios
  • Face recognition of video content for metadata extraction
  • Image or pattern recognition for investigations, for example in satellite imagery
