Due to low demand, we unfortunately have to cancel this on-site course. Please consider attending the on-site "Parallel Programming Workshop (MPI, OpenMP and Advanced Topics)" at HLRS on 10 – 14 October 2022 in Stuttgart covering part of the topics. We are planning to offer the "Iterative Solvers for Linear Systems" part of the course by Prof. Dr. Andreas Meister as an on-line course later this year.
Contents
The focus of this on-site compact course at LRZ in Garching near Munich is on iterative and parallel solvers, the parallel programming models MPI and OpenMP, and the parallel middleware PETSc.
Thereby, different modern Krylov Subspace Methods (CG, GMRES, BiCGSTAB ...) as well as highly efficient preconditioning techniques are presented in the context of real life applications.
Hands-on sessions (in C, Fortran and Python) will allow users to immediately test and understand
- the basic constructs of iterative solvers,
- the Message Passing Interface (MPI) and
- the shared memory directives of OpenMP (in C and Fortran).
This course provides scientific training in Computational Science, and in addition, the scientific exchange of the participants among themselves. It is organised by LRZ in cooperation with the University of Kassel, the High-Performance Computing Center Stuttgart (HLRS) and IAG.
Each participant will get a pdf version of the slides.
A preliminary agenda is available here.
Prerequisites
- Monday+Tuesday: Unix / C or Fortran (MPI: or Python)
- Wednesday+Thursday: Basics of linear algebra / MATLAB or GNU Octave
- Friday: Unix / C or Fortran
Hands-On
Please bring your own laptop with X11 support and an ssh client installed for the hands-on sessions. There are no PCs installed in the course room!
Under Windows
- We recommend to install the comfortable tool MobaXterm (https://mobaxterm.mobatek.net/download-home-edition.html) which also includes an X11 client.
- Alternatively install and run the Xming X11 Server for Windows: https://sourceforge.net/projects/xming/ and then install and run the terminal software putty: https://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/latest.html
- Under macOS
- Install X11 support for macOS XQuartz: https://www.xquartz.org/
- Under Linux
- ssh and X11 support comes with all distributions
There are two options:
- You can login to our CooLMUC2 Cluster @ LRZ with 28-way Haswell-based nodes and FDR14 Infiniband interconnect from your laptop. Several nodes will be reserved on the cluster for the course.
- You use your own laptop or login to your institute's cluster. Recent versions of MPI, OpenMP and MATLAB or GNU Octave (available for free) should be installed. Please ensure that the following tests run on your environment:
- Please tar -xvzf TEST.tar.gz using https://fs.hlrs.de/projects/par/events/TEST.tar.gz or unzip TEST.zip using https://fs.hlrs.de/projects/par/events/TEST.zip and verify your MPI and OpenMP installation with the tests described in TEST/README.txt within the archive.
