Student Assistants / Internships

We are looking continuously for student assistants, chemists, physicists, or materials scientists, supporting our ongoing projects in clay mineralogy and actinide chemistry. Our investigations on clay minerals aim for an understanding of the distribution of substitutions, especially iron, and their effect on properties of the minerals. Our activities in actinide chemistry contribute to the understanding of processes relevant for safety considerations of underground storage of radioactive waste. Here the interaction of actinide ions with minerals as well as their complexation in ground waters is considered.

You will learn to carry out quantum chemical calculations at the density functional level on parallel computers for solids and surfaces or complexes in solution. You will also support the evaluation of results and quality control. This activity is done in close collaboration with the scientist responsible for the specific task.

Basic knowledge of quantum chemistry is a prerequisite, e.g. at the level of a first lecture on quantum mechanics in chemistry. Basic proficiency of Linux commands and shell programming is of advantage. Ideally this activity is done for more than 8 hours per week for several months.

From time to time we have also tasks appropriate for internships according to the curriculum for master studies in chemistry.
