Please use this online form to register for the 23 January 2020 workshop on changes in transatlantic and transpacific security relations and their effects on public opinion regarding national and international security.  The workshop is organized and will be led by Profs. Tim Büthe (TUM) and Joseph Grieco (Duke) with Prof. Naoko Matsumura (Kobe) and Prof. Atsushi Tago (Waseda) with support from the Stiftung Deutsch-Amerikanische Wissenschaftsbeziehungen (SDAW), the Chair for International Relations (Prof. Tim Büthe), the Hochschule für Politik München, the Technical University of Munich (TUM), and the Bavarian American Academy.

Date and locations

Thursday, 23 January 2020

8:30 - 12:30 HfP/TUM School of Governance (Richard-Wagner-Str.1, 80333 Munich), Room H.001

13:00 - 17:00 Bavarian American Academy (Barer Straße 19a, 80333 Munich)

The morning keynotes and roundtable will be devoted to the evolution of German (and for comparison Japanese) attitudes toward foreign and security policy issues, including alliances, defense spending, the use of force and, especially, nuclear weapons.  The afternoon keynote and roundtables will explore opportunities and limitations of survey experiments to study two recent developments in (inter)national security, with important implications for Germany and Japan, respectively:  Uncertainty about the U.S. commitment to NATO and the US-Japan alliance, respectively, and new offensive weapons systems developed by Russia and North Korea, which military experts see as having the primary purpose of allowing these countries to threaten neighboring countries.  The keynotes and discussion are open to anyone; registration for the roundtables, which will include discussions of a research project proposal developed by the conveners, is by invitation only.
