Frequently Asked Questions about ShareLaTeX @ TUM

How can I login to ShareLaTeX?

  • Open sharelatex.tum.de in your browser and login with your TUM ID (something like "ga12xyz") and password.
  • Any person with an active TUM account can login (i.e. students, staff, guests, but not alumni).
  • You don't need to register.

Can I keep my ShareLaTeX account after leaving TUM?

  • No, you can't login without TUM account and all your projects will be deleted 45 days after your account ended.
  • Projects you have shared with other users will also be deleted, so make sure to save them.

Can I use Grammarly with ShareLaTeX?

Can I use Git with ShareLaTeX?

I can edit my LaTeX code, but when I recompile, the message "Server Error: Please try again later" is shown

  • Try to compile without images, i.e. in draft mode, to reduce compilation time and system load ( Recompile > Fast [draft] )
  • Please try again later.

I can't see the "Share" Button to share my project

  • Some browsers use adblockers and tracking shields that erase the "Share" button.
  • Deactivate adblockers and activity tracking shields for sharelatex.tum.de

Why do I own a cryptic email like "ga12xyz@mytum.de" in ShareLaTeX?

  • Since your primary TUM email address can be changed, your account is connected to your unchangeable technical email to ensure access to your ShareLaTeX account.

Which browsers are supported?

  • Any modern browser with HTML5 support will do.
  • JavaScript support and cookies are required.
  • Turn off all adblockers and tracking shields.

I am not able to compile my project. I get no error message besides "Server Error. ...", and no log files are visible. Other projects compile okay.

  • Check if there is a file included in the project that has 0 byte file size and delete it.
  • Check if there are any opening brackets without closing counterpart. Sometimes there is no proper error message for this.
  • If that doesn't help, rebuild your project file by file to locate the cause of the error.

My bibliography does not reflect changes in the bib resource file or does not work at all

  • ShareLaTeX sometimes uses a cached version of the file. Rename the bib file and try again.
  • If you use Biber as backend, changing \addbibresource{ref.bib} to \addbibresource{ref}, compiling, changing it back and compiling again resolves the problem.

Probably it is caused by some temporary files of biber that Sharelatex does not remove upon "clear cached files."

My bibliography is empty when called with \printbibliography

  • Do provide \cite{} commands or \nocite{*} before calling \printbibliography.

I cannot download my project. The download seems to start but never finishes.

  • Check if there are files included in the project that have 0 byte file size and delete them.
  • Try again.

What is the maximum size of editable files, uploads and projects?

  • The maxium size of editable content is 5mb of text.
  • The maximum file size you can upload is 50mb (pics, zip, git push).
  • In general, there is no fixed size limit for projects. However, if one of your projects should grow excessively, it might be deactivated to ensure a stable operation of the service.

I keep getting the "Server error..." or "Compile timeout error..." message, since my project is very large and contains high-resolution images or tikz-graphics. What can I do?

What happens to projects of orphaned accounts?

  • You need an active TUM account (i.e. students, staff and guests, but not alumni) to access your projects. Please make sure to download and save your project data before your TUM account ends.
  • Projects of inactive user accounts are kept for a period of 45 days before they are deleted.
  • Keep in mind, that projects you have shared with other users may also be lost, when your account ends.

  • An invitation email will be sent to your collaborator, with a link to the project
  • The number of collaborators is not limited
